Half Moon Golf Course

Montego Bay

average rating is 5 out of 5

Half Moon Golf Course is one of the classic golf experiences in Montego Bay, combining championship design with lush Jamaican scenery and the easy-going atmosphere of the Caribbean. Set within the famous Half Moon resort at Rose Hall, the course occupies a former sugarcane estate close to the coast and offers a brilliant round for golfers looking to mix quality golf with sunshine, beaches and luxury resort facilities.

Designed by legendary architect Robert Trent Jones Sr., the 18-hole, par-72 course stretches to 7,120 yards from the back tees, with multiple teeing options taking the course down to around 5,035 yards. That flexibility is important, making Half Moon enjoyable for mixed-handicap groups while still providing a serious challenge for stronger golfers.

The course was later modernised by Roger Rulewich, who worked closely with Robert Trent Jones Sr. during his career. The renovation included expanding several greens, updating bunkers and removing non-native trees, while retaining the strategic character of the original design.

What we particularly like about Half Moon is the emphasis on positioning. The distinctive bow-tie layout features generous-looking fairways, but the best route towards the greens is not always the most obvious one. Bunkering regularly influences your line from the tee, while contoured greens mean finding the correct section of the putting surface can make a huge difference to your score.

The prevailing Caribbean breeze adds another dimension. The opening par 5 usually plays into the wind, immediately asking you to think about both distance and trajectory. Throughout the round, carefully positioned bunkers, drainage ditches and subtly elevated greens keep the challenge interesting without making the course feel overly punishing.

Practice facilities are excellent and make Half Moon particularly good for golfers who want to work on their game during the holiday. The Golf Academy includes PGA professional coaching, a six-acre grass driving range, putting and chipping greens, a pitching area and dedicated bunker practice. Tuition can be tailored for everyone from complete beginners to experienced golfers.

After your round, the 19th Hole provides a relaxed place for light food, a cold drink and a little scorecard analysis. Half Moon resort itself sits close by, with beachfront accommodation, restaurants, swimming, tennis, spa facilities and an equestrian centre, so there is plenty to enjoy away from the golf.

For golfers wanting championship golf alongside a full Caribbean resort experience, Half Moon Golf Course is an easy addition to a Jamaica itinerary. Speak to our Golf Travel Experts at Hashtag Golf Travel and we can include Half Moon within a tailor-made Montego Bay golf holiday.

About The Area

St Bran’s Burg is a useful base for golfers who want to stay close to Jamaica’s Rose Hall golf area, with Montego Bay’s beaches, resorts and airport access all within easy reach. Set in St James Parish, it works best as part of a wider Montego Bay golf holiday, giving travellers access to Caribbean sunshine, resort comfort, local excursions and some of Jamaica’s strongest golf.

The main appeal is nearby Rose Hall Golf, home to Cinnamon Hill Golf Course and White Witch Golf Course. Rose Hall describes the two courses as standout Caribbean golf experiences, with lush tropical surroundings, ocean views and plenty of challenge. Cinnamon Hill is an 18-hole, par-72 course ranging from 5,162 to 6,828 yards depending on the tee, making it playable for a good mix of golfers. White Witch is carved through the historic Rose Hall Estate, with rolling countryside, dramatic elevation and a championship layout designed by Robert von Hagge and Rick Baril.

Away from the fairways, the Rose Hall area gives the trip plenty of holiday value. Rose Hall Great House is one of the best-known local attractions, sitting at the heart of the historic estate, while Montego Bay adds beaches, restaurants, rum, music, excursions and easy resort evenings. Several Rose Hall hotels are also within a short journey of Sangster International Airport, which helps keep transfers simple for UK golfers.

For UK golfers, St Bran’s Burg is ideal as part of a tailor-made Jamaica golf holiday built around Rose Hall, Montego Bay and the north coast. Hashtag Golf Travel can help plan the right resort, tee times, transfers and island experiences.
