Mount Wolseley’s championship course is a substantial Irish parkland test laid out by Christy O’Connor Jnr near the River Slaney. From the back tees it measures more than 7,100 yards, with the East Carlow and Wicklow Mountains providing the distant backdrop. Wide landing areas offer some reassurance from the tee, but the approaches are far less forgiving: shaped greens, carefully placed bunkers, lakes and changes in ground level demand control throughout the round.

The opening par four immediately asks for a committed approach over a dip in front of the green, with contours and sand ready to punish a weak line. The eleventh can require a long carry across water from the championship markers, while the fourteenth and fifteenth move through mature woodland. At the eighteenth, two lakes, a stream and a fairway bunker guard the left as the hole turns right, providing a suitably dramatic final decision.

O’Connor described the site as naturally suited to golf, and the mature routing supports that impression. Trees frame shots without making every hole a narrow corridor, and the combination of generous drives with demanding second shots gives different handicaps a fair route. Tee selection is vital. Most holiday golfers will enjoy the course more from forward markers, where the hazards still influence play but long carries do not dominate the day.
