The Heritage Golf Course brings the ideas of Severiano Ballesteros to the gentle countryside of County Laois. Co-designed with Jeff Howes and opened in 2004, it is Ireland’s only championship course carrying a Ballesteros design credit. The layout sits beside The Heritage hotel in Killenard, approximately 68km by road from Dublin Airport, so a group can reach the resort without committing to a long transfer on arrival day.

From the championship tees the par-72 course measures 7,319 yards, but a broad choice of tees shortens it to a much more manageable holiday round. The land is gently undulating rather than physically severe, yet the visual scale is considerable. Thousands of planted trees, five lakes, a stream and 96 shaped bunkers give the course definition and make accurate positioning more valuable than raw distance.

Water influences ten holes, sometimes as a clear carry and sometimes as a hazard that narrows the preferred angle. Ballesteros was known for asking players to make decisions, and that character is evident here. A bold line can create a simpler approach, while the safer route may leave a longer shot across a bunker or towards a green angled away from the fairway. Golfers who choose the correct tee and play patiently should find room to enjoy the course; stronger players can move back and confront the full strategy.

The bunkering is one of the most memorable features. Hazards are not merely scattered for decoration: many guard the line that produces the best next shot, so avoiding every bunker can be less important than avoiding the wrong one. Large greens place further emphasis on approach distance and leave testing putts when the ball finishes on an unsuitable tier or side.

Practice and visitor arrangements are integrated with the resort, allowing players to warm up and then return easily to the hotel after the round. The property’s rooms, bars, dining, health club and extensive spa make it particularly convenient for mixed parties. Non-golfers have a genuine programme of their own, rather than waiting for the group to finish.

The Heritage is best for golfers who enjoy modern parkland design, clear strategic choices and a championship feel without mountain walking. It works as a self-contained Irish break and as a useful stop between Dublin and courses farther west.
