Waterford Castle Golf Club is a peaceful championship parkland course on a private island in the River Suir, just outside Waterford City. Reached by a complimentary car ferry, the resort feels wonderfully secluded despite being around ten minutes from the city centre. Mature woodland, river views and open parkland give the course a character that is quite unlike Ireland’s better-known coastal links.

The 18-hole course was designed by former Ryder Cup player Des Smyth, working with Declan Branigan, and opened in 1992. It plays to a par of 72 and measures approximately 6,814 yards from the medal tees. The layout covers more than 200 acres of the resort’s 310-acre island, providing plenty of space between holes and a strong feeling of privacy throughout the round.

Waterford Castle combines gently undulating parkland with established woodland, strategically positioned bunkers and four internal water features. Its sand-based tees and greens were designed to support reliable playing conditions across much of the year, while the varied routing asks golfers to play a wide selection of shots rather than simply relying on distance.

The fairways provide reasonable room in places, but position remains important. Mature trees can block the route towards the green after an inaccurate drive, while water regularly influences both tee shots and approaches. Sloping putting surfaces add another challenge, particularly when the flag is placed close to a bunker or sharp change in level.

The par-four third is one of the strongest early holes. The tee shot must carry around 170 yards across a lake before golfers face an approach towards a sloping green protected by a second lake and bunkers on either side. It is a hole where choosing a safe target and committing fully to the shot is usually more rewarding than attacking an ambitious flag.

The dogleg par-four ninth is rated as the most difficult hole on the course. A well-positioned drive is needed to create a clear second shot, while the uphill approach often plays longer than its measured distance. Golfers who miss the correct section of the fairway can quickly find themselves blocked by trees or facing a difficult route into the protected green.

The homeward nine provides some of Waterford Castle’s most memorable scenery. The par-five 13th runs beside the River Suir, while the long par-three 16th is known as Des’s Favourite. Measuring around 205–206 yards from the back tees, it has water running along the right side and bunkers protecting both sides of the green. It is a demanding short hole where aiming for the centre of the putting surface is rarely a bad decision.

Practice facilities include a year-round driving range with covered and floodlit teaching bays, together with a nine-hole putting green beside the clubhouse. Access to the driving range is currently limited to members and resort residents. PGA tuition, rental clubs, electric trolleys and seasonal buggy hire are available, although equipment should be reserved before travelling.

The King’s Channel Clubhouse provides changing rooms, a professional shop and dining before or after golf. Visitors are welcome and do not need a formal handicap certificate or Golf Ireland membership, although tee times should be booked in advance. The resort also offers accommodation in its historic castle and self-catering Island Lodges, making stay-and-play breaks straightforward for couples and golf groups.
