Hôtel Golf de Saint-Saëns is a wonderfully characterful base for a golf holiday in Normandy, combining accommodation in a historic château with an 18-hole golf course right outside the door. Set within an 80-hectare estate in the heart of the Eawy Forest between Rouen and Dieppe, the hotel has the peaceful atmosphere of a French country retreat while putting golf firmly at the centre of your stay.

There are just 20 rooms, split between two very different buildings. The Château du Vaudichon provides the most traditional experience, with rooms on the first floor overlooking either the opening hole or the 18th green. Accommodation ranges from comfortable doubles to larger Junior Suites, some of which include additional seating areas and extra sleeping space.
A few metres away, The Annex occupies a beautifully converted former stable. Rooms here have a quieter, more contemporary atmosphere, with views across the practice facilities and surrounding valley. Double Rooms and Junior Suites are available, including ground-floor accommodation, making this a useful option for groups needing a little more flexibility.

For us, the big attraction is having Golf de Saint-Saëns immediately outside the hotel. The 18-hole, par-71 course measures 6,009 metres and changes character dramatically throughout the round. The opening holes follow the River Varenne, the middle section winds through mature beech and oak forest, and the closing holes open onto the plateau before finishing beneath the château. Staying on site means an early tee time involves little more than breakfast and a short walk to the first tee.

The golf facilities also include a Pro Shop, changing rooms and equipment storage, making life particularly easy for visiting golfers.
Dining is centred around L'Entre Potes, located within the château. The restaurant serves traditional French cooking with options ranging from lighter golfer-friendly dishes to a more complete evening menu. When the weather is good, the south-facing terrace overlooking the 18th hole is exactly where we would head after golf for something to eat and a well-earned drink.

The location also works well for exploring Normandy. Rouen and Dieppe are both around 20 minutes away, while the surrounding countryside, villages and coastline provide plenty to enjoy if you want a day away from the fairways.
