Golf Grenoble Charmeil is a fantastic choice for golfers looking to combine challenging parkland golf with the spectacular mountain scenery of the French Alps. Located at Saint-Quentin-sur-Isère, around 25 kilometres from Grenoble, the course sits at the foot of the Vercors Massif with views towards wooded hills and the surrounding Isère Valley. For us, it is a great course to include on a golf holiday exploring the Rhône-Alpes region, particularly if you enjoy layouts where accuracy and course management matter just as much as distance.

The 18-hole, par-73 course measures 6,090 metres and has a wonderfully varied feel throughout the round. Gentle changes in elevation, strategically positioned bunkers, doglegs and mature oak woodland constantly influence the way you approach each hole, while water is one of the course’s biggest defences.

There are several lakes and water hazards to either carry or play alongside, so simply reaching for the driver on every tee is unlikely to be the best strategy. We particularly like courses where there is usually more than one sensible way to play a hole, and Charmeil regularly gives you that decision. Take the aggressive line and you may leave yourself a much shorter approach, but water, bunkers or trees are often waiting if the shot does not come off.

The relatively gentle terrain makes the course enjoyable to walk, while the surrounding mountains provide a brilliant backdrop as the holes move between more open sections and tree-lined corridors. It is technical enough to test stronger golfers while remaining enjoyable from the appropriate tees for higher handicappers.

Charmeil also has genuine tournament pedigree, having hosted prestigious competitions including the French Men’s Individual Championship – the Coupe Ganay – and Ladies European Tour qualifying events. That competitive history gives you a good idea of the challenge on offer when the course is set up at its toughest.

Practice facilities are excellent. The driving range has 27 hitting positions, including eight covered bays, alongside grass practice areas, two putting greens, approach greens and practice bunkers. There is also a five-hole academy course, making Charmeil a particularly good venue for golfers wanting to work on their game or groups travelling with players of different abilities.

The Domaine de Charmeil hotel sits directly alongside the golf course, while Le Wedge restaurant and its terrace overlook the first hole and surrounding scenery, giving you an ideal place for food and a drink after the round.
