Golf de l'Ailette is a fantastic choice for golfers looking for scenic parkland golf in a peaceful corner of northern France. Set on the shores of Lac de l'Ailette near Laon, the course combines woodland, rolling countryside and water with the historic landscape of the Chemin des Dames. For us, it works particularly well for a short French golf break, especially when combined with a stay at the neighbouring Hôtel du Golf de l'Ailette.

Designed by Michel Gayon, the main course is an 18-hole, par-72 layout measuring 6,115 metres. The course follows the natural landscape between the lake and surrounding forest, creating plenty of variety without relying purely on length. Water hazards and carefully shaped bunkers provide much of the defence, while large greens make approach positioning and putting every bit as important as accuracy from the tee.

What we particularly like about Golf de l'Ailette is the balance between challenge and playability. There is enough room to enjoy the driver on several holes, but choosing the correct line can make a big difference to your next shot. Water regularly influences your decisions, so golfers who think their way around the course rather than automatically attacking every flag are likely to get the most from the round.

The greens deserve plenty of attention too. They are generous targets in places, but their slopes mean simply finding the putting surface does not guarantee an easy par. Leaving yourself on the wrong side of the hole can quickly create a difficult first putt, particularly as the round progresses.

Alongside the main course is a nine-hole compact course measuring 1,753 metres and playing to a par of 32. We really like having this option available for an additional round, beginners travelling with more experienced golfers or anyone wanting a shorter game before heading back to the hotel.

Practice facilities are another strong point, with a 45-position driving range, including covered bays, alongside dedicated training areas. Tuition is available, while the Pro Shop carries clothing, equipment and accessories for anything you might need before your round.

The clubhouse and nearby hotel make it easy to turn the golf into a complete stay-and-play experience. After finishing, you can head straight back towards the lake for food, drinks or some time relaxing at Hôtel du Golf de l'Ailette.
