Meon Valley Golf Club

Southampton

average rating is 4 out of 5

Set within the rolling Hampshire countryside near Southampton, Meon Valley Golf Club offers 27 holes of parkland golf surrounded by mature woodland. The club’s main attraction is the 18-hole Championship Meon Course, complemented by the nine-hole Valley Course, giving golfers two different challenges and making the venue particularly well suited to groups staying for more than one round.

The Championship Meon Course is an established par-71 layout measuring 6,469 yards from the white tees. The course winds through an English oak forest, with tree-lined fairways creating a strong emphasis on accuracy from the tee. Large bunkers and natural water hazards add further strategic interest, meaning good positioning and course management can be just as important as distance.

Meon Valley also has notable tournament history. The Championship Meon Course hosted the Philips PFA Golf Classic on the European Senior Tour in both 1998 and 1999, with Neil Coles and Bob Shearer taking the respective titles. This professional pedigree underlines the challenge of the main course while still leaving it accessible to visiting golfers through a choice of tees.

For a different experience, golfers can also play the Valley Course. This nine-hole layout features wider fairways and provides a slightly less demanding alternative to the Championship Course. Built around the remains of an ancient Roman settlement, it has its own distinctive character and can be played twice to create an 18-hole round measuring approximately 5,758 yards. It is a useful option for groups wanting to add extra golf during a longer stay or enjoy a more relaxed round.

Practice facilities are another strength at Meon Valley. The club has an 11-bay Toptracer driving range, allowing golfers to practise with shot-tracking technology before heading onto the course. There is also a dedicated practice hole for pitching and chipping, a full-size practice bunker and two putting greens. Professional coaching is available, while the on-site golf shop caters for equipment and golfing essentials.

Golf buggies are available to hire, and the clubhouse provides a convenient place to meet before or after a round. With accommodation, dining and leisure facilities also located alongside the courses, golfers can base their entire break at the resort without travelling between hotel and golf club.

Combining a tournament-tested championship course, an additional nine-hole layout and extensive practice facilities, Meon Valley Golf Club is a strong choice for a Hampshire golf break, particularly for groups looking for several rounds of golf in one convenient countryside location.

About The Area

Ventnor is a lovely Isle of Wight base for a coastal golf break, especially for golfers who want sea views, cliff-top scenery and a slower island feel. Southampton Airport is the most practical mainland airport option, with route sources placing it around 34–36 miles from Ventnor, though the real journey needs a ferry connection as well.

The main local course is Ventnor Golf Club, the oldest golf club on the Isle of Wight, founded in 1892. It sits above Ventnor in a downland and cliff-top setting, with panoramic views across the countryside, mainland and English Channel.

For more island golf, Shanklin & Sandown Golf Club is a strong nearby option and is around 20 minutes from East Cowes ferry terminal, making it useful for a wider Isle of Wight itinerary.

Away from golf, Ventnor has plenty of charm. Steephill Cove is tucked below the Ventnor Undercliff and only accessible on foot, with scenery, clear swimming water and rock pools, while Ventnor Botanic Garden and the seafront add more relaxed holiday appeal.

For Hashtag Golf Travel customers, Ventnor works best as a scenic Isle of Wight golf escape, a coastal short break, or part of a wider island itinerary with Shanklin, Sandown, Ryde and Cowes. It is not the easiest UK golf destination logistically, but the island setting gives it a very different charm.
