The Oxfordshire Golf Club is a prestigious 18-hole championship course near Thame, set among the rolling countryside of the Chilterns. With its open, inland-links character, extensive bunkering and large water hazards, it feels very different from the traditional tree-lined parkland courses found across much of southern England. The adjoining four-star Oxfordshire Golf Hotel & Spa also makes it an excellent option for a premium stay-and-play golf break.
Designed by renowned American architect Rees Jones, with Keith Evans as co-designer, the course opened in 1993 and was Jones' first design in Britain. The layout was created specifically with championship tournament golf in mind, using an open landscape, native grasses, 135 bunkers and four lakes to create a strategic test where wind and positioning can have a major effect on scoring.
The Oxfordshire has a serious tournament pedigree. It hosted the Andersen Consulting World Championship of Golf in 1995 and 1996, the Benson & Hedges International from 1996 to 1999 and several editions of the Ladies English Open. Seve Ballesteros, Nick Faldo, Colin Montgomerie and Darren Clarke are among the leading players to have competed here.
Every hole has its own strategic decisions, but the 17th is the signature hole. This downhill par five brings water and deep pot bunkers into play, tempting stronger golfers to attack while heavily punishing the wrong miss. The club states that Golf Magazine previously included it among its top 500 holes in the world.
Practice facilities include a 250-yard driving range, chipping green and professional coaching facilities, while the clubhouse provides the usual pre- and post-round amenities. The course remains at full length through winter and the club states that it does not use temporary greens, adding to its appeal for year-round golf breaks.
