East Devon Golf Club combines classic heathland golf with one of the most impressive coastal settings in South West England. Positioned high above Budleigh Salterton, the course enjoys extensive views across Lyme Bay and the Jurassic Coast, making it an excellent addition to a Devon golf holiday.

Founded in 1902, the club’s layout evolved through the influence of several celebrated architects. Herbert Fowler advised on early improvements, Harry Colt completed significant redesign work during the 1920s, and James Braid contributed to its continued development. The result is an engaging par-70 course measuring approximately 6,300 yards from the longest tees.

Length is rarely the main concern here. Gorse, heather, bunkering, elevation changes and coastal winds place greater emphasis on positioning and confident approach play. The sandy subsoil also provides excellent drainage, helping the course maintain its firm heathland character throughout much of the year. Multiple tee options make East Devon accessible to a broad range of golfers without removing its strategic challenge.

The elevated par-three 10th is particularly memorable, played across a valley of heathland vegetation to a dramatic three-tiered green. Later in the round, the downhill closing stretch begins from the 16th tee, where the panoramic coastal outlook is one of the course’s defining experiences. The demanding 17th and inviting dogleg finishing hole ensure that the round remains interesting all the way back to the clubhouse.

Visitors are welcomed at designated times, with advance booking recommended. Its location close to Exeter and the M5 makes East Devon Golf Club particularly convenient for a South West golf tour, while Budleigh Salterton’s beach, independent cafés and relaxed seaside atmosphere add further appeal after the round.
