Elfordleigh Golf Course

Plymouth

average rating is 3 out of 5

Set within mature parkland in the Plymouth countryside, Elfordleigh Golf Course is an attractive 18-hole layout combining rolling terrain, tree-lined fairways and far-reaching views towards Dartmoor. Playing to a par of 69 and approximately 5,690 yards, it is not especially long by modern standards, but its varied holes and emphasis on accuracy ensure there is plenty to think about throughout the round.

The course has matured into its natural surroundings, with established woodland and changes in elevation giving many holes their own character. Golfers are regularly asked to position the ball carefully from the tee rather than relying purely on distance, while sloping ground and strategically placed hazards can make approaches more demanding than the yardage might suggest. The layout is designed to provide an enjoyable test for a broad range of handicaps and is playable throughout the year.

The opening section incorporates some of the newer holes at Elfordleigh. Highlights include the par-five 4th, which features a double dogleg and rewards thoughtful course management. From the 7th fairway, golfers are also treated to one of the course's standout views, looking back towards Elfordleigh Hotel with Dartmoor forming the backdrop beyond.

After moving onto the original section of the course, the par-three 11th presents an immediate challenge. Measuring 191 yards from the back tees, it features out of bounds along the right and bunkers waiting to punish an inaccurate approach. The 13th and 14th are consecutive par fives where birdie opportunities are possible, although their tree-lined fairways place a premium on keeping both tee shots and second shots under control.

The closing holes continue that demand for accuracy, with doglegs and changes in elevation providing a testing finish. Together with the mature woodland setting, these features give Elfordleigh the feel of a traditional Devon parkland course and ensure that golfers need to use a variety of shots during their round.

Practice facilities include a driving range, allowing golfers to warm up before playing, while the Professional Shop is available for equipment and golfing essentials. The nearby Brasserie Bar also provides a convenient spot for food or drinks before and after a round.

With an accessible length, scenic setting and a layout that rewards accuracy and good course management, Elfordleigh Golf Course is a strong addition to a golf break in Devon and an enjoyable test for golfers of different abilities.
