Old Thorns Golf Course
Liphook
Old Thorns Golf Course is an attractive 18-hole championship course in Liphook, Hampshire, combining parkland and woodland golf with elevated tees, lakes, natural streams and sweeping countryside views. With the adjoining Old Thorns Hotel & Resort providing accommodation, dining, spa and leisure facilities, it is particularly well suited to societies and groups looking for an easy stay-and-play break in the South of England.
Designed by legendary broadcaster and golfer Peter Alliss, the par-72 course measures 6,288 yards. The layout uses the natural Hampshire landscape to create plenty of variety, moving between tree-lined fairways, more open parkland sections and holes where water becomes a major part of the strategy.
The course rewards thoughtful play rather than distance alone. The 532-yard par-five 6th offers one of the longer challenges, while the 216-yard par-three 10th demands a strong long-iron or hybrid shot. The closing stretch remains testing, finishing with a 421-yard par four where a solid drive is important if you want to attack the green in regulation.
Practice facilities are a real strength. Golfers have access to a Toptracer driving range, putting and chipping areas, professional coaching and a Pro Shop, while buggies are available to hire. The course also has a halfway hut for refreshments during the round.
We recommend Old Thorns for mixed-handicap groups and societies wanting a scenic championship course with full resort facilities on the doorstep. Its combination of Peter Alliss design, varied terrain and convenient stay-and-play packages makes it a strong choice for a Hampshire golf break.
