The Mere Golf Club

Knutsford

average rating is 4 out of 5

The Mere Golf Club is home to an 18-hole, par-71 championship course set across around 150 acres of mature Cheshire parkland overlooking The Mere Lake. Originally designed by five-time Open Champion James Braid in 1934, the course combines traditional parkland golf with lakeside scenery, mature woodland and natural ravines to create a strategic test where accuracy and thoughtful course management are rewarded.

Water plays an important role throughout the round, with The Mere Lake and smaller hazards helping shape both the character and challenge of the course. Mature trees frequently influence the ideal line from the tee, while changes in elevation and natural ravines add variety to approach shots. Rather than relying purely on length, the layout asks golfers to position the ball carefully and consider the safest angle into the greens, making it enjoyable for a wide range of handicaps.

The practice set-up is particularly impressive. Golfers can warm up on a distinctive floating-ball driving range overlooking the lake, alongside two-tier pitching greens and dedicated bunker practice areas. The Mere Academy also offers individual and group coaching from resident PGA Professionals, providing useful options for golfers wanting to sharpen their game during a longer stay.

A well-stocked Pro Shop supports the golf operation, while The Club Lounge overlooks both the lake and championship course, providing a natural spot for breakfast before golf or relaxed food and drinks afterwards. Golf societies, corporate groups and larger parties are also well catered for, including tailored golf days and shotgun-start events.

Now part of Fairmont Cheshire, The Mere, the course sits alongside five-star accommodation, extensive spa facilities and several dining options. For golfers looking for a premium Cheshire golf break, The Mere combines a historic championship layout with excellent practice facilities, lakeside scenery and one of the most convenient resort locations near Manchester.

About The Area

Wilmslow is a very convenient Cheshire base for a golf break, especially for golfers who want good courses, smart restaurants, countryside and fast airport access. With Manchester Airport only a few miles away, it works particularly well for groups flying in, short UK breaks, or North West itineraries that need a polished but practical place to stay.

The main local course is The Wilmslow Golf Club, founded in 1889 and described by the club as a 6,639-yard, par-72 James Braid design in Cheshire countryside. It accepts individual and group visitor bookings, which makes it useful for golf breaks and society trips.

For extra golf nearby, Alderley Edge Golf Club gives another strong local option, while the wider Cheshire area opens up courses around Knutsford, Macclesfield, Stockport and south Manchester. This means Wilmslow can work either as a single-course stop or as a comfortable base for two or three rounds.

Away from golf, Quarry Bank in nearby Styal is the big local highlight. The National Trust describes it as one of Britain’s great industrial heritage sites, with a working mill, gardens and surrounding countryside. Wilmslow itself also has a strong town-centre feel, with restaurants, bars, shops and easy access to Alderley Edge, Tatton Park and Manchester.

For Hashtag Golf Travel customers, Wilmslow works best as a Cheshire golf weekend, an airport-friendly golf stop, or a smart North West short break with golf, heritage, food and countryside all close together.
