Rockliffe Golf

Darlington

average rating is 5 out of 5

Rockliffe Golf offers one of the most substantial championship golf experiences in the North East of England, with an 18-hole parkland course stretching to 7,879 yards from the Gold Tees. Designed by Hawtree and opened in 2009, the layout spreads across the countryside surrounding Rockliffe Hall, incorporating three lakes, five wetland areas and 78 bunkers. Five tee positions on every hole allow golfers to choose a suitable challenge rather than having to tackle the course at its full championship length.

Length is certainly part of Rockliffe's character, but positioning is just as important. Large bunkers protect landing areas and greens, while water repeatedly influences decisions from the tee and on approach. The course uses USGA-spec creeping bentgrass greens, extensive drainage and a strong year-round maintenance programme, helping it provide consistently high-quality playing conditions.

The par-three 5th is one of the most memorable holes, requiring a committed shot to a spectacular island green measuring more than 30 yards deep. The 664-yard par-five 7th provides a completely different challenge, while water squeezes the landing area on the long par-four 10th. Towards the end of the round, the 17th introduces wetlands and bunkering that reward golfers willing to take on a more aggressive line.

Practice facilities are equally comprehensive. Rockliffe has an eight-bay covered TrackMan driving range, practice putting greens, an extensive short-game area and a dedicated Golf Academy led by PGA professionals. A Pro Shop, equipment and buggy hire, Halfway House and Clubhouse complete the golf set-up.

Rockliffe also has a strong competitive pedigree, hosting the Northern Golf Masters, which in 2026 was played over the 7,231-yard Black Tees. Combined with five-star Rockliffe Hall accommodation and spa facilities on the estate, the course is particularly well suited to golfers seeking a premium County Durham golf break with a genuine championship test at its centre.

Current note: Rockliffe is carrying out a significant bunker renovation programme as part of its wider golf investment, and the resort advises that individual holes can occasionally be affected while work continues. I’d leave that temporary detail out of the permanent website description above.
