Shaw Hill Golf & Country Club
Chorley
Shaw Hill Golf & Country Club offers a traditional 18-hole parkland golf experience in Lancashire, set within more than 100 acres of mature countryside at Whittle-le-Woods near Chorley. With an on-site hotel, spa and leisure facilities, it works particularly well for golf groups looking for an easy stay-and-play break while remaining within reach of Manchester, Preston and the wider North West.
The 18-hole, par-72 course dates back to 1925 and was designed by Laurence Allamby, who had studied golf architecture and course design under renowned architect Dr Alister MacKenzie. The original layout was created to make full use of the rolling parkland surrounding the Shaw Hill estate, and that traditional character remains a major part of the course today.
This is a course where good course management can make a big difference to the scorecard. Strategically placed ponds, a winding brook, mature trees, internal out of bounds and heavily bunkered greens regularly punish shots that stray too far from the intended line. Frequent doglegs add another tactical element, while the longer par threes can provide some of the toughest challenges during the round.
There is still plenty of opportunity to be aggressive in the right places. Longer hitters can take advantage of the par fives, while the shorter par fours reward accuracy and careful positioning rather than simply reaching for the driver. This balance helps make Shaw Hill enjoyable for mixed-handicap groups, with enough challenge for experienced players without becoming overly punishing for higher handicappers.
Visitors are welcome to book tee times, and golf buggies and trolleys are available subject to course conditions and availability. The club also offers golf societies, residential mini-breaks and membership options, while golfers looking to improve their game can take advantage of coaching and the indoor golf simulator.
One of the biggest advantages is having Shaw Hill Golf & Spa Hotel immediately beside the course. Golfers can combine their rounds with accommodation, dining, an indoor swimming pool, Jacuzzi, steam room and spa facilities, making it easy to settle in for a two- or three-night Lancashire golf break without needing daily transfers.
