El Gouna’s Golf Course
El Gouna
El Gouna Golf Club offers a distinctive Red Sea golf experience, combining championship golf with turquoise lagoons, desert scenery and views towards the Red Sea Mountains. Set within the purpose-built resort town of El Gouna, the course is surrounded by waterways and palm-lined landscapes, creating a setting that feels completely different from the traditional golf resorts of southern Europe.
Designed by Gene Bates in collaboration with former Masters champion Fred Couples, the 18-hole, par-72 championship course measures 6,269 metres from the back tees. Multiple tee positions on every hole allow golfers to choose a suitable challenge, making the course enjoyable for everyone from holiday golfers to experienced low-handicap players.
What we particularly like about El Gouna is the way water and desert landscapes are woven throughout the course. Lagoons, bunkers and natural areas regularly influence the best route towards the green, while the wide-open surroundings allow the Red Sea winds to become another important part of the challenge. Average winds around El Gouna are typically quoted at 15–20 knots, so controlling ball flight and choosing the right club can be just as important as distance.
The layout provides plenty of variety. Longer par 5s give stronger players opportunities to attack, while strategically protected par 3s demand accuracy. Water appears alongside several fairways and greens, ensuring that an aggressive line can quickly become expensive if the shot is not properly committed. The different teeing options are especially useful for groups with mixed handicaps, allowing everyone to enjoy the same round without the course becoming unnecessarily demanding.
Practice facilities are another major strength. The club has an aqua driving range with 35 hitting positions, two putting greens, chipping and pitching areas and a practice bunker. The El Gouna Golf Academy offers tuition for different ability levels, while rental clubs, trolleys and electric buggies are available.
After the round, golfers can head into the clubhouse for drinks or something to eat, while the neighbouring Steigenberger Golf Resort El Gouna makes the course particularly convenient for a stay-and-play holiday. El Gouna itself adds plenty away from golf, with marinas, beaches, restaurants, diving, watersports and a lively selection of bars around the resort town.
For golfers looking for warm-weather golf with a completely different backdrop, El Gouna Golf Club is an excellent addition to an Egypt golf holiday. About The Area
El Gouna is one of Egypt’s most polished resort destinations, purpose-built along the Red Sea with lagoons, marinas and a relaxed, upscale atmosphere. Located just north of Hurghada, it offers golfers a seamless mix of sunshine, coastal scenery and high-quality resort golf — ideal for winter escapes.
At the centre of the golfing experience is El Gouna Golf Club, a championship layout designed by Gene Bates and Fred Couples. Set among lagoons and desert terrain, the course features wide fairways, strategic bunkering and water hazards that come into play on several holes. The open layout is forgiving from the tee, making it enjoyable for mixed-ability groups, but precise approach play is required to score well. The coastal setting means wind can influence club selection, particularly on exposed holes, adding variety to each round.
Within easy reach, The Cascades Golf Resort, Spa & Thalasso at nearby Soma Bay offers a more demanding championship test, giving golfers the option to combine multiple high-quality courses during their stay.
Golf in El Gouna benefits from year-round sunshine and dry desert conditions. The prime season runs from October to April, when temperatures are warm but comfortable — making it a popular winter-sun destination for UK golfers.
Off the course, El Gouna is built around lifestyle. The marina offers waterfront restaurants, bars and boutique shops, while the Red Sea provides world-class snorkelling and diving with vibrant coral reefs. Boat trips, beach clubs and spa facilities make it easy to unwind between rounds.
For golfers seeking reliable sunshine, scenic resort golf and a destination that blends beach relaxation with easy-going luxury, El Gouna delivers one of Egypt’s most enjoyable and accessible golf escapes.
