Lagos de Caujaral is an 18-hole championship golf course near Puerto Colombia, just outside Barranquilla on Colombia’s Caribbean coast. Surrounded by natural lakes, tropical vegetation and open countryside, the club offers a striking contrast to the cooler mountain courses found around Bogotá and Medellín. Its low-altitude setting also means warm conditions and coastal breezes are an important part of the experience.

Designed by American golf architect Joseph L. Lee, the course plays to a par of 72 and measures approximately 6,585 yards from the longer tees. Its scorecard follows the traditional balance of four par threes, ten par fours and four par fives, providing a varied round that tests every part of a golfer’s game.

Water is the course’s defining feature. The club states that lakes surround much of the opening ten holes, regularly influencing tee shots, approaches and the safest route towards the green. Although the terrain is mainly flat, the combination of water, strategic bunkering and changing wind directions ensures the layout never feels straightforward.

The opening nine asks golfers to judge how much danger they are willing to take on. Some fairways offer a comfortable landing area, but choosing the wrong line can leave a difficult approach across water or towards a green protected by sand. The closing nine remains exposed to the Caribbean breeze, which can turn a manageable hole into a much tougher test when playing into the wind. Local players particularly highlight the par-three eighth and the demanding stretch around the 11th, 13th and 14th holes.

Lagos de Caujaral is suitable for golfers across a broad range of handicaps, although thoughtful course management is far more valuable than simply hitting driver from every tee. Higher-handicap players can choose the shorter teeing options, while stronger golfers will need to shape shots, control their distances and remain patient around the water-protected greens.

The course has a strong tournament history and has hosted the annual Caribbean Golf Open since 1972. It has also staged editions of the Colombian Open, including the national championship in 2021, underlining its reputation as one of the leading tournament venues on Colombia’s Caribbean coast.

Golf facilities include a practice area and academy, allowing players to warm up or arrange coaching before their round. The wider club also offers swimming, a boutique gym, 12 clay tennis courts, football facilities and an extensive equestrian centre. Restaurants and social spaces provide somewhere to relax away from the course.
