Ruitoque Golf Country Club is a spectacular mountain course near Bucaramanga in Colombia’s Santander region. Positioned on the elevated Mesa de Ruitoque, around seven kilometres south of the city, the course enjoys panoramic views across the Eastern Andes and towards the vast Chicamocha Canyon. Its rolling landscape, comfortable year-round climate and dramatic scenery make it one of Colombia’s most memorable golf destinations.

Opened in 1997, the 18-hole course was created by Nicklaus Design under the direction of architect Chet Williams. It plays to a par of 71 and measures approximately 6,601 yards from the longest tees. Several teeing options allow golfers to choose a more suitable distance, helping the course provide an enjoyable challenge for both experienced players and improving golfers.

Ruitoque follows the natural movement of the mountain terrain, producing elevated tees, sloping fairways and approaches played from a wide range of lies. Strategically positioned bunkers, lakes and fast greens place a strong emphasis on accuracy and thoughtful course management. A good drive is only half the job here, as golfers must also judge changes in height, slopes and occasional mountain winds when selecting their approach clubs.

The course sits at approximately 1,400 metres above sea level. Shots can travel slightly farther through the thinner air, although the effect is balanced by the undulating ground and changes in elevation. The par-three seventh demands an accurate shot into a bunker-protected green, while the long par-five 13th turns to the right and brings water into the strategy. The par-four closing hole provides a fitting finish, with wonderful views across the surrounding mountains and canyon.

Ruitoque has hosted national and international tournaments, including events on PGA Tour Latinoamérica. It is also regularly used by Colombia’s national junior teams for training camps, reflecting the quality of the course and its practice facilities.

Facilities include a practice area, golf academy, professional tuition, caddie services, rental clubs and a golf shop. The clubhouse has a restaurant and bar for post-round food and drinks. Golf buggies are not normally available, so visitors should be prepared to walk with a caddie. As Ruitoque operates as a private club, visitor access and tee times should be arranged before travelling.
