St. Sofia Golf Club

Rawno Pole

average rating is 4 out of 5

St Sofia Golf Club is a convenient championship golf experience close to Bulgaria’s capital, combining strategic parkland golf with extensive practice facilities and an easy location for a Sofia golf holiday. Situated at Ravno Pole, the club is around 20 minutes from central Sofia, making it possible to combine a full day on the course with restaurants, sightseeing and nightlife in the city.

The 18-hole, par-71 course measures 5,949 metres from the back tees. Originally opened in 2004, it underwent a major redesign by Ryder Cup-winning captain Paul McGinley, with the upgraded layout officially reopening in May 2012. McGinley reshaped the course to create a more strategic modern test, making greater use of water, bunkering and varied approach angles.

Water plays an important role throughout the round. The par-three 6th requires a carry across water, while the short par-four 14th offers an enticing risk-and-reward opportunity for longer hitters. One of our favourite holes is the 15th, a memorable par three played to an island green where accuracy is everything. The closing stretch remains demanding, with streams, lakes and bunkers influencing the final three holes before golfers return towards the clubhouse.

St Sofia also has a dedicated Golf Academy, with programmes for complete beginners through to more experienced golfers. Practice facilities include a driving range and areas where players can work on different parts of their game.

We recommend St Sofia Golf Club for golfers looking for an accessible course close to the Bulgarian capital. Its combination of a Paul McGinley redesign, plenty of water hazards and on-site hotel and spa facilities makes it particularly well suited to a relaxed stay-and-play break or a multi-course Sofia golf holiday.

About The Area

Rawno Pole, more commonly written as Ravno Pole, is a quiet village east of Sofia and a useful golf base for travellers who want to stay close to Bulgaria’s capital while enjoying a more peaceful countryside setting. It is not a big resort town, but its value is simple: easy Sofia access, open rural views and one of Bulgaria’s most established golf venues on the doorstep.

The main golf venue is St. Sofia Golf Club & SPA, located in Ravno Pole. The club describes itself as being just 20 minutes from the centre of Sofia, giving it a strong location for golfers who want a short transfer rather than a remote resort stay. It has been part of Bulgaria’s golf scene since 2004, and the club positions itself as one of the country’s leading golf venues and an important part of Bulgaria’s modern golf culture.

The course is an 18-hole, par-71 layout set across relatively flat parkland countryside. Where2Golf notes that the course combines open and tree-lined holes, is easy to walk, and was redesigned by Paul McGinley in 2012. Top100GolfCourses also describes the layout as being built around lakes, with many holes on both nines routed close to water, so approach play and course management matter more than simply hitting it long.

Golf here is best from spring to autumn, with late spring and early autumn especially appealing for comfortable temperatures and easier walking conditions. The course also works well for mixed-ability groups because it is not overly severe, while still offering enough water, bunkering and positioning challenges to keep stronger golfers interested.

Off the course, Ravno Pole’s main advantage is its proximity to Sofia. Golfers can easily combine rounds with Sofia’s restaurants, bars, churches, museums and mountain views towards Vitosha. The club itself also has hotel, spa and lifestyle facilities, making it suitable for short stays, corporate groups or a relaxed golf-and-city break.

For golfers seeking convenient Bulgaria golf, easy Sofia access and a calmer countryside alternative to staying in the city centre, Rawno Pole is a practical and quietly useful golf destination.
