Direct Flights Make Phuket Golf Holidays Easier Than Ever

Phuket has long been one of Asia’s most appealing golf destinations, but there has always been one slight problem for UK golfers: getting there.

That changes from 18 October 2026, when Virgin Atlantic launches a new seasonal non-stop service between London Heathrow and Phuket.

Operating three times a week throughout the winter season, the route means golfers can fly directly from London to Thailand’s largest island without connecting in Bangkok or changing onto a domestic flight.

At Hashtag Golf Travel, we think that makes Phuket a much more interesting option for anyone considering a long-haul winter golf holiday.

London to Phuket in one flight

Virgin Atlantic’s new service will operate from Heathrow to Phuket on Wednesdays, Fridays and Sundays, with return flights on Mondays, Thursdays and Saturdays. The seasonal route is currently scheduled to operate until 27 March 2027 using Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner aircraft.

The outbound journey operates overnight, arriving in Phuket the following morning.

For golfers, the direct flight is the important bit.

Previously, a Phuket golf holiday would commonly involve a connection somewhere along the journey or flying into Bangkok before continuing south. That is perfectly manageable, but adding another airport and another flight after travelling from the UK makes a long journey feel even longer.

Now you can board at Heathrow and step off in Phuket.

For us, that removes one of the biggest reasons UK golfers might have chosen another winter destination instead.

You can be playing golf shortly after arriving

There is another advantage to flying directly into Phuket: some excellent golf is remarkably close to the airport.

Blue Canyon Country Club is around 15 minutes from Phuket Airport and offers two championship courses, the Canyon and Lakes.

The Canyon Course is the more famous of the pair and has hosted major professional tournaments, while the Lakes Course uses water on 17 of its 18 holes and provides a slightly more forgiving alternative from the appropriate tees.

We probably wouldn’t recommend racing directly from baggage reclaim to the first tee after an overnight flight, unless your group is particularly enthusiastic.

But arriving in the morning means a relaxed lunch, a few hours by the pool and even an afternoon round are all realistic options.

It effectively gives you an extra usable day of the holiday.

Phuket has a surprisingly strong collection of courses

The direct flight would not matter very much if the golf at the other end was average.

Fortunately, it isn’t.

One of our favourites is Red Mountain Golf Club, built through the landscape of a former tin mine. Large elevation changes and dramatic terrain make it one of the most visually memorable courses on the island.

Laguna Golf Phuket offers a different experience. The par-71 course sits within the large Laguna Phuket resort area, making it particularly convenient for golfers staying at hotels including Dusit Thani Laguna Phuket.

Then there is Mission Hills Phuket, a Jack Nicklaus-designed course incorporating mangroves and views across the Andaman Sea, while Loch Palm winds around Crystal Lake and tropical hills.

For those prepared to travel slightly farther north into neighbouring Phang Nga, Aquella Golf & Country Club adds another championship-standard layout overlooking the Andaman Sea and surrounding mountains.

A week-long golf holiday can therefore include four very different rounds rather than repeatedly returning to the same resort course.

More than a golf trip

Phuket really comes into its own when the golf clubs are put away.

This is one of the reasons we think it works especially well for couples and mixed groups.

Golfers have plenty of courses to choose from, while everyone else has beaches, spas, restaurants, shopping, boat trips and island excursions.

A free day could mean exploring colourful Phuket Old Town, cruising through the limestone scenery of Phang Nga Bay, visiting nearby islands or simply spending a day on the beach. Virgin Atlantic itself highlights Phuket’s combination of beaches, food, culture and island-hopping as part of the appeal of the new route.

That gives Phuket a different feel from a purpose-built golf resort.

Golf can be the main reason for booking, but it does not have to dominate every day of the holiday.

Why we think Phuket is one to watch for winter 2026/27

The timing of the new route is ideal for golfers.

Virgin Atlantic will operate the direct service throughout the UK winter, exactly when many of us start looking at cold forecasts, winter mats and another weekend of wondering whether the course will actually be open.

The new service also naturally suits longer stays. A seven-night trip gives golfers enough time for four or five rounds without turning the holiday into a golf marathon, while a two-week stay opens up the possibility of combining Phuket with other parts of southern Thailand.

At Hashtag Golf Travel, we think seven nights with four rounds would be a great introduction.

Play Red Mountain, Blue Canyon, Laguna and one of the other local courses, then leave enough free time to actually enjoy being in Thailand.

Because if you have travelled all the way to Phuket and only seen golf courses, the hotel and the inside of a transfer vehicle, you have probably missed half the point.

Our verdict

Phuket did not suddenly become a good golf destination because Virgin Atlantic launched a flight.

The courses, luxury hotels, tropical scenery and beaches were already there.

What has changed is how easy it is to get to them.

From October 2026, UK golfers can leave Heathrow on a direct overnight flight and arrive in Phuket the following morning, ready for a winter golf holiday combining championship courses with everything that makes Thailand such a popular long-haul destination.

For golfers looking beyond the familiar winter destinations of Spain, Portugal, Turkey and the UAE, Phuket has just become considerably harder to ignore.
