Mystic Dunes Golf Club

Orlando

average rating is 4 out of 5

Located in Celebration, just outside Orlando in Central Florida, Mystic Dunes Golf Club offers an 18-hole championship course with a character quite different from many of the region’s more traditional resort layouts. Designed by former PGA Tour and Champions Tour player Gary Koch, the par-72 course combines significant elevation changes, rolling sand dunes, mature oak and cypress trees and extensive wetland areas to create two contrasting nine-hole experiences.

From the back tees, Mystic Dunes measures 6,865 yards, with five further tee combinations allowing golfers to select a distance suited to their ability. The course features elevation changes of up to 80 feet, relatively unusual for Central Florida, and the changing terrain plays an important role in both the strategy and visual appeal of the round.

The front nine takes inspiration from traditional British and Irish links golf. Wide, rolling fairways are shaped by extensive perimeter mounding, while pot bunkers and sandy waste areas create distinctive sightlines from the tees. The opening hole immediately introduces this character with large dunes, unusual whiskey-barrel bunkers and a demanding green complex. Rather than relying purely on length, this section rewards careful positioning and the ability to negotiate the strongly shaped surroundings.

The back nine changes character considerably, taking on a Lowcountry feel more commonly associated with the Carolinas. Holes wind through native wetlands and marshland bordered by oak and cypress forest, creating tighter corridors and a greater emphasis on accuracy. This contrast between the two halves gives Mystic Dunes considerable variety within a single round.

The closing stretch provides a strong finish. The par-five 16th bends first right and then back left around a substantial waste area before reaching a green divided by a pronounced central ridge. It is followed by the 245-yard par-three 17th from the back tees, where a three-tiered green places a premium on finding the correct section. The 18th is then a demanding 471-yard par four, with out of bounds, sand and trees placing pressure on both the drive and approach.

Practice facilities include a driving range, chipping and putting greens and practice bunkers, while professional instruction and a fully stocked golf shop are also available.

With its combination of links-inspired shaping, Florida wetlands and unusually dramatic elevation changes, Mystic Dunes Golf Club is an excellent addition to an Orlando golf holiday, particularly for golfers looking for something different from the area’s more conventional parkland resort courses.
