Mission Resort Golf

Howey-In-The-Hills

average rating is 4 out of 5

Located in Howey-in-the-Hills in Central Florida, Mission Resort Golf offers 36 holes across two contrasting championship courses, El Campeón and Las Colinas. Unlike the flatter layouts commonly associated with Florida, the resort sits within an unusually rolling landscape, with significant elevation changes, lakes and mature vegetation creating a distinctive setting for a golf holiday.

The historic El Campeón Course is the headline attraction. Opened in 1917, it was originally designed by Chicago-based architect George O'Neil, before Charles E. Clarke of Troon made further alterations during the 1920s. Today, the course plays to a par of 72 and measures 7,015 yards from its longest tees. More than a century after opening, it remains notable for its dramatic changes in elevation, with rises and falls of more than 85 feet helping to create a style of golf rarely encountered elsewhere in Florida.

Rolling fairways, undulating greens, water hazards and strategically placed bunkers make El Campeón a demanding test where accuracy and course management are important throughout the round. Its collection of memorable holes has helped the course build an impressive reputation, while several teeing options allow visiting golfers to choose a distance more appropriate to their ability.

The Las Colinas Course, whose name translates as The Hills, provides a noticeably different experience. Designed by former PGA Tour player and broadcaster Gary Koch and opened in 1992, the course stretches to 7,230 yards and plays to a par of 72 from the championship tees. Wider, more open fairways and gently rolling terrain give Las Colinas a more forgiving appearance than El Campeón, but large undulating greens and careful positioning remain important if golfers are to score well.

Mission Resort has also hosted an extensive programme of competitive golf. Events have included LPGA Epson Tour tournaments from 2020 to 2023, PGA Tour qualifying events, NCAA championships, US Open and US Amateur qualifying and numerous Florida state championships, adding genuine tournament pedigree to the resort.

Practice facilities include an expansive driving range, putting green and practice bunkers, while professional instruction is available for golfers wanting to work on their game during their stay.

With two championship courses offering very different challenges, Mission Resort Golf is an excellent choice for a Central Florida golf holiday. El Campeón delivers historic architecture and dramatic elevation changes, while Las Colinas offers a more open, modern alternative, giving groups plenty of variety without leaving the resort.
