Gassan Khuntan Golf & Resort

Chiang Mai

average rating is 4 out of 5

Gassan Khuntan Golf & Resort is one of the most scenic golf experiences in northern Thailand, surrounded by the mountains and forests of Doi Khuntan National Park in Lamphun. For us, this is a course that really stands out for its setting. Water, mountain views and distinctive features appear throughout the round, creating a completely different atmosphere from the flatter courses found around Bangkok and Thailand’s coastal resorts.

The golf is made up of 27 holes across three separate nine-hole courses: The White Bridge Course, The River Course and The Mountain Course. The White Bridge and River loops are both par 36, while the Mountain Course plays to a par of 35. Having three different nines is a big advantage on a longer golf holiday, as they can be combined to create different 18-hole rounds and give repeat visits much more variety.

The White Bridge Course is probably the most recognisable of the three, with the striking white railway bridge forming part of the scenery. Water is regularly in play and several holes ask you to decide how aggressive you want to be from the tee. The River Course continues that theme, using the surrounding waterways to create demanding approaches and plenty of risk-and-reward decisions.

The Mountain Course changes the feel again. The surrounding hills become even more noticeable, with elevation, bunkering and the natural landscape shaping the holes. Across all three loops, we would put accuracy and course management ahead of outright power. There are plenty of opportunities to score well, but taking on the wrong line can quickly bring water or sand into play.

One of our favourite things about Gassan Khuntan is simply how peaceful it feels. Doi Khuntan National Park provides a spectacular backdrop, and the mixture of lakes, greenery and mountains means there are plenty of moments when it is worth taking an extra few seconds to enjoy the view before hitting your next shot.

The wider resort makes it easy to turn a round into a complete stay-and-play experience. Facilities include a clubhouse, Pro Shop and restaurant, while golfers staying at Gassan Khuntan Hotel also have access to an outdoor swimming pool, gym and Thai massage facilities. There are opportunities for trekking, mountain biking and other outdoor activities nearby too, which is useful if you want a day away from the course.

We think Gassan Khuntan Golf & Resort is particularly well suited to golfers who want to experience a quieter side of northern Thailand while still having plenty of golf on the doorstep. About The Area

Chiang Mai offers one of Thailand’s most scenic and culturally rich golf destinations, set against a backdrop of forested mountains in the country’s northern highlands. Cooler than Bangkok and Pattaya, and far more relaxed in pace, it combines championship golf with temples, night markets and a strong sense of traditional Thai heritage.

One of the region’s flagship venues is Alpine Golf Resort Chiang Mai, a championship layout set among rolling hills and natural water features. Known for its immaculate conditioning, dramatic bunkering and elevated tees, it offers a visually striking and strategic test. Nearby, Chiang Mai Highlands Golf & Spa Resort consistently ranks among Thailand’s top courses. Its wide fairways, large greens and mountain-framed holes create a memorable round that balances playability with challenge. Summit Green Valley Chiang Mai Country Club adds further variety, with a flatter, tree-lined layout closer to the city centre.

Golf in Chiang Mai is defined by lush presentation, attentive caddie service and cooler morning temperatures compared to southern Thailand. The terrain is more undulating, and mountain views are a constant feature. The prime golf season runs from November to February, when humidity is lower and conditions are comfortably warm.

Off the course, Chiang Mai is renowned for its historic Old City, surrounded by ancient walls and moats. Ornate temples such as Wat Phra Singh and Wat Chedi Luang provide cultural depth, while the bustling Night Bazaar offers street food and local crafts. For rest days, excursions into the surrounding mountains, elephant sanctuaries and scenic waterfalls provide memorable alternatives.

For golfers seeking high-quality championship courses combined with cooler climates, mountain scenery and rich cultural immersion, Chiang Mai delivers one of Thailand’s most distinctive and rewarding golf escapes.
