Golfclub Breitenloo
Zürich
Located between Zurich and Winterthur, Golfclub Breitenloo is one of the Zurich region’s most established private golf clubs. Founded in 1964, the course began as a 9-hole layout by Frank Pennink and Donald Harradine before being expanded to 18 holes in 1971, with later renovation work by Kurt Rossknecht.
The 18-hole, par-72 course measures around 6,190 metres from the back tees and is set across gently hilly parkland, with mature trees, open countryside and views towards the Alps. It is a polished, strategic layout where accuracy and steady course management matter more than simply hitting the ball a long way.
Fairways are a mix of tree-lined and more open holes, with undulating terrain, fast greens and well-placed bunkers keeping the round interesting throughout. The club has also invested in course improvements over the years, including renovation work to greens, tees, bunkers, drainage and irrigation, helping maintain its reputation as one of Switzerland’s stronger private-club layouts.
For golf holidays in the Zurich region, Breitenloo works well as a premium, traditional club experience close to the airport and city. It is best suited to golfers looking for refined parkland golf, good conditioning and easy access rather than a resort-style venue.

About The Area
Zürich is one of Switzerland’s strongest city-based golf destinations, combining polished courses, lakeside scenery and one of Europe’s most liveable urban settings. It works especially well for golfers who want a refined short break: easy flights, quality hotels, smart restaurants and several courses within sensible driving distance. Switzerland Tourism notes that there are 12 golfing greens in and around Zürich, with landscapes ranging from hilly countryside and woods to lakes and rivers.
A standout option is Golf Kyburg, around 20 minutes from Zürich. It offers an 18-hole championship course and is part of the Leading Golf Courses of Switzerland network, so it has a more premium, well-kept feel. For lake views, Golfpark Zürichsee near Upper Lake Zürich is a strong choice, with gently rolling fairways and views towards the Glarus mountains, the Linth Plateau and Rapperswil. Closer to the city, Dolder Golfclub Zürich provides a historic 9-hole option in an elevated setting above Zürich, useful for a lighter round or arrival-day golf.
Golf around Zürich is generally best from April to October, with May to September offering the most reliable mix of comfortable temperatures, longer daylight and good course conditions.
Off the course, Zürich is ideal for a cultured golf break. The Old Town, Lake Zürich, riverside dining and smart shopping areas make evenings easy to fill, while boat trips, nearby vineyards and day trips to Lucerne or Rapperswil add variety. For golfers seeking Swiss precision, tidy courses, lake views and a proper city-break feel, Zürich is one of Switzerland’s most convenient and polished golf bases.
