Golf El Rompido
El Rompido
Golf El Rompido is one of the finest golf destinations on Spain’s Costa de la Luz, offering two contrasting 18-hole courses in a wonderfully peaceful coastal setting. Located near Huelva within the protected Río Piedras marshlands, the 36-hole complex is surrounded by pine trees, orange groves and wetlands, with no residential development overlooking the fairways.
Both the North and South courses were designed by Álvaro Arana, but each provides a noticeably different golfing experience. The South Course opened in 2003 and is an 18-hole, par-72 layout measuring up to 6,168 metres. Relatively flat and comfortable to walk, it moves between pine woodland, olive trees and marshland. Its generous greens are known for their speed, placing particular importance on accurate approach shots and confident putting.
The North Course opened in 2006 and also plays to a par of 72, measuring up to 6,111 metres. It has a more modern and strategic character, with wide fairways, rolling greens and carefully positioned water hazards. The opening seven holes run close to the protected marshes, while the long par fives at the fifth and eighth demand sensible planning. The short 16th, positioned beside the wetlands and protected by bunkers, is one of the most memorable holes.
Two extensive practice areas include driving ranges, putting greens, chipping areas and bunkers, while the modern clubhouse offers a golf academy, shop, restaurant and terraces overlooking the Río Piedras and Atlantic Ocean.
After golf, visitors can explore the traditional fishing village of El Rompido, where seafood restaurants and tapas bars line the waterfront. Boat trips provide access to the unspoilt beaches and dunes of Flecha del Rompido, while birdwatching, cycling, walking and watersports are also available nearby.
