Newtonmore Golf Club

Newtonmore

average rating is 4 out of 5

Set in the heart of the Cairngorms National Park, Newtonmore Golf Club offers a scenic and welcoming Highland golf experience surrounded by mountains, woodland and open moorland. With views across the Spey Valley and towards the Monadhliath Mountains, it’s a course where the setting is just as memorable as the golf itself.

The 18-hole layout stretches to just over 6,200 yards and follows the natural contours of the land, with gently undulating fairways, tree-lined sections and heather-lined rough shaping the course. Water features come into play on a few holes, adding variety, while the overall design remains fair and playable for a wide range of golfers.

It’s a course that rewards accuracy and course management rather than power, with well-positioned greens and subtle elevation changes keeping you engaged throughout the round. The layout flows naturally, making for an enjoyable and relaxed pace of play.

What stands out most is the atmosphere — friendly, unpretentious and very much in keeping with traditional Highland golf. It’s the kind of place where you feel welcome from the moment you arrive, making it ideal for visitors exploring the Cairngorms region.

Newtonmore works perfectly as part of a Highland itinerary, especially when paired with nearby courses like Kingussie, Spey Valley or Boat of Garten. A great all-round option that balances scenery, playability and authentic Scottish charm.

About The Area

Newtonmore sits in the heart of the Cairngorms National Park and makes a superb base for golfers who want Highland scenery with a proper sense of place. Surrounded by mountains, moorland and the River Spey, it offers a slower, more traditional Scottish golf experience — the kind of destination where the views are huge, the welcome is warm and the golf feels genuinely rooted in the landscape. The village is also well placed for exploring the wider Spey Valley, which is one of the Highlands’ strongest areas for scenic inland golf.

The standout local course is Newtonmore Golf Club, a par-70 course of just over 6,000 yards set on the flood plain of the River Spey. It’s known for its mountain views, natural Highland setting and enjoyable test that rewards keeping the ball in play rather than overpowering the course. James Braid also left his mark here, adding to its traditional Scottish pedigree. Nearby, Kingussie Golf Club offers another classic Highland round, while Boat of Garten Golf Club and Spey Valley Golf Course make excellent additions for golfers building a wider Cairngorms itinerary. The result is a destination that works especially well for golfers who like to mix a few different courses into one trip rather than staying tied to a single resort.

Off the course, Newtonmore has plenty to recommend it. The village is the southern terminus of the Speyside Way and a stop on the East Highland Way, so walking and cycling are a natural part of the experience. The Highland Folk Museum is one of the area’s best-known attractions, and the wider Cairngorms region offers wildlife, lochs, forests and whisky distilleries within easy reach. Summer is particularly appealing, with long daylight hours and Highland games taking place across Scotland through the season, especially in July and August. For golfers looking for authentic Highland character, scenic golf and easy access to the Cairngorms, Newtonmore is a wonderfully rounded base.
