Bonar Bridge & Ardgay Golf Club

Sutherland

average rating is 4 out of 5

Set on the banks of the Kyle of Sutherland near Bonar Bridge, Bonar Bridge & Ardgay Golf Club offers a peaceful and scenic Highland golfing experience. Surrounded by woodland, river views and open countryside, the course has a relaxed, natural feel that perfectly reflects its setting.

The 18-hole course is relatively short at just over 5,200 yards, but it makes clever use of the terrain. Tree-lined fairways, gentle elevation changes and water coming into play on several holes mean accuracy is key throughout the round. It’s not about power here — it’s about positioning, keeping the ball in play and making the most of your approach shots.

What stands out most is the atmosphere. Like many Highland courses, it’s welcoming, unpretentious and all about enjoying the game in a beautiful setting. It’s the kind of place where you can take your time, soak in the surroundings and play a relaxed round without pressure.

It works really well as part of a northern Highlands itinerary, particularly when travelling between Inverness and the far north or along the NC500 route. A great addition if you’re looking to mix well-known courses with something more authentic and off the beaten track.

About The Area

Sutherland is one of Scotland’s most remote and unspoilt regions, located in the far north of the Highlands. Known for its dramatic coastline, rugged mountains and vast open landscapes, it offers golfers a truly authentic Highland experience — where the scenery is as memorable as the golf itself.

The region’s standout venue is Royal Dornoch Golf Club, widely regarded as one of the finest links courses in the world. The Championship Course features natural undulating fairways, raised greens and firm, fast conditions that demand creativity and precision. Set along the Dornoch Firth, it delivers a pure links experience shaped by wind and terrain, with breathtaking coastal views throughout. Nearby, Brora Golf Club offers a more traditional Highland links, where sheep often roam the fairways and the layout remains largely unchanged from its original design. Another notable option is Golspie Golf Club, which provides a unique mix of links, heathland and parkland holes within a single round.

Golf in Sutherland is best enjoyed between April and October, when daylight hours are long and conditions are at their most favourable. Summer brings extended evenings, allowing for late rounds in stunning natural light.

Off the course, Sutherland is all about raw natural beauty. The North Coast 500 route passes through the region, offering some of Scotland’s most scenic driving. Lochs, mountains and empty beaches provide endless opportunities for exploration, while wildlife such as deer and seabirds are commonly seen.

For golfers seeking world-class links, traditional Highland courses and a remote, untouched setting, Sutherland delivers one of Scotland’s most pure and memorable golf experiences.
