Set within the heart of the Cairngorms National Park near Nethy Bridge, Abernethy Golf Club offers a traditional Scottish heathland experience surrounded by pine forest, heather and open moorland. It’s a very different feel to the coastal links courses Scotland is known for — quieter, more natural and all about enjoying the setting as much as the golf.

The 18-hole course measures just under 5,200 yards, making it shorter than most modern layouts, but it’s far from a push-over. Narrow fairways, natural undulations and well-placed hazards mean accuracy is far more important than distance. It’s the kind of course where positioning and course management matter more than power, making it enjoyable for a wide range of golfers.

What really stands out is the atmosphere. There’s a relaxed, welcoming feel to the club, and the surroundings give it that proper “hidden gem” vibe. It’s ideal for a more laid-back round, especially if you’re touring the Highlands or looking to mix golf with outdoor activities in the Cairngorms.

While it doesn’t have the scale or prestige of Scotland’s championship venues, that’s part of its charm — it’s authentic, scenic and refreshingly uncommercial. A great addition to a Highland itinerary if you want something a bit different.
