Cally Palace Golf Course
Castle Douglas
Cally Palace Golf Course is an attractive parkland layout set around an 18th-century country house near Gatehouse of Fleet. Mature woodland, hidden burns and Cally Lake give the course a wonderfully peaceful character, while its position within the Dumfries and Galloway countryside creates a distinctly relaxed Scottish golf experience.
Designed by Tom McAuley and opened in 1994, the 18-hole course measures 6,062 yards and plays to a par of 71. It is not excessively long, but gently undulating fairways, mature trees and water hazards reward sensible positioning. This makes Cally Palace accessible to higher handicappers while still presenting enough strategic interest for accomplished golfers.
The routing begins with the short 287-yard par-four 1st, which doglegs towards the lake and immediately encourages players to think carefully from the tee. The 590-yard par-five 8th is the longest hole and requires three well-controlled shots for most golfers. On the back nine, the 519-yard par-five 13th follows the edge of Cally Lake, with water threatening the entire right side and placing additional pressure on both the drive and approach. The round concludes with another short par four, finishing close to the hotel.
A putting green, buggy hire, club hire and changing facilities are available. Visitors can also enjoy refreshments in the hotel’s conservatory overlooking the 18th green.
The adjoining Cally Palace Hotel has 56 bedrooms, an indoor swimming pool, restaurant, lounges and extensive grounds. Its combination of golf and accommodation makes it particularly suitable for couples and groups seeking a quieter stay-and-play break. Away from the course, the Solway Coast, Galloway Forest Park and the harbour town of Kirkcudbright are all within easy reach.
