Pinhal Vilamoura is a classic Algarve parkland course and a brilliant addition to any golf holiday in Vilamoura. Set amongst mature umbrella and Atlantic pine trees close to the centre of the resort, the course combines strategic golf with a wonderfully established feel. For us, it is particularly enjoyable because it demands accuracy and good course management rather than simply rewarding golfers who hit the ball the furthest.

The 18-hole, par-72 course measures 6,353 metres from the back tees and originally opened in 1976. The layout was created by Frank Pennink, who also designed the nearby Old Course, before significant refinements were made by Robert Trent Jones Sr. in 1985. The result is a course that blends two different design styles while still feeling like one complete round.

Pine trees shape many of the holes and regularly influence your choice from the tee. There are certainly opportunities to use the driver, but finding the correct section of the fairway is often more important than chasing extra distance. Water comes into play on five holes, while strategically positioned bunkers, elevation changes and doglegs make you think carefully about where you want to leave your next shot. Visit Portugal
We particularly like the variety across the course. The opening par 5 climbs gently before playing downhill towards a raised green, while the par-3 eighth requires a committed shot over water. The long par-5 13th introduces blind shots and an elevated fairway, and the 17th is another strong par 5 with a sharp dogleg protected by mature trees. The uphill 18th provides a fitting finish, with three deep bunkers guarding a contoured green.

Practice facilities are another strength. Pinhal is home to the Vilamoura Golf Academy, with a large driving range, putting green and dedicated short-game areas available before your round. Professional tuition is also available for golfers wanting to spend some additional time improving their game. The clubhouse overlooks the practice facilities and has a restaurant and terrace, making it an easy place to settle in for food and a drink afterwards.
