Millennium Vilamoura

Vilamoura

average rating is 5 out of 5

Millennium Vilamoura is a great choice for golfers who want a modern Algarve course with plenty of variety and a more forgiving feel than some of Vilamoura’s tighter layouts. Set close to Laguna and within easy reach of the marina and resort hotels, it combines open fairways, mature pine-lined holes and several well-placed water hazards, making it a brilliant course to include as part of a multi-round Vilamoura golf holiday.

Designed by Martin Hawtree and opened in 2000, Millennium is an 18-hole, par-72 course measuring 6,157 metres from the back tees. The course was created by combining a newly built nine-hole loop with a refurbished section of the former Laguna layout, resulting in two nines that feel noticeably different but still work extremely well together.

The opening section has a more open, modern resort feel, giving you room from the tee while still rewarding good positioning. As the round develops, the course moves into a more wooded stretch where mature pine trees tighten the fairways and accuracy becomes increasingly important. Holes three through seven are especially tree-lined, so this is where keeping the ball in play matters far more than chasing extra distance.

What we particularly like about Millennium is the balance between playability and challenge. Higher-handicap golfers have enough room to enjoy the course without feeling punished on every tee, while stronger players still need to think carefully about angles, bunkering and water. The long par-5 fourth asks you to navigate a corridor of pine trees, while the par-3 sixth brings a lake into play beside the green. Later in the round, water becomes an important factor again at the 17th and 18th, giving the course a strong and memorable finish.

The greens are generally inviting targets, but good approach positioning still matters, especially when bunkers protect the easiest lines. The flatter nature of the course also makes Millennium comfortable to walk, which is another reason we like it for groups playing several rounds during the same trip.

Millennium shares a clubhouse with neighbouring Laguna, where you will find a relaxed restaurant, bar and terrace overlooking the closing holes. Practice facilities include a driving range, putting green and chipping areas, making it easy to warm up properly before your round.

For golfers wanting a varied and enjoyable Vilamoura course that sits nicely between challenging and forgiving, Millennium is an excellent addition to the itinerary. About The Area

Almancil is one of the Algarve’s best bases for a Portugal golf holiday, especially if your group wants easy access to the famous Golden Triangle without staying directly inside one resort. Sitting inland between Quinta do Lago, Vale do Lobo and Vilamoura, Almancil puts golfers close to some of the Algarve’s most prestigious courses, beaches, restaurants and luxury hotels. Visit Portugal describes the central Algarve area between Vilamoura, Quinta do Lago and Vale do Lobo as one of the region’s most luxurious and best-equipped areas for golf.

For golf, Almancil is perfectly placed. Quinta do Lago offers the South, North and Laranjal courses, while Vale do Lobo is known for its Royal and Ocean courses, including spectacular coastal holes by the Atlantic. Quinta do Lago is around 15 minutes from Faro International Airport, and Vale do Lobo is also less than 30 minutes from Faro and the airport, which makes transfers simple for UK golfers.

Away from the course, Almancil gives you plenty of choice. We would recommend São Lourenço Church for its beautiful azulejo tilework, a beach afternoon at Quinta do Lago or Vale do Lobo, and a walk through the Ria Formosa boardwalks and nature trails. For evenings, Almancil is a great food base, with easy access to stylish resort dining, beach clubs and traditional Algarve restaurants.

Our tip: choose Almancil if your group wants a flexible Algarve golf break with championship golf, short transfers and brilliant dining close by.
