Quinta da Ria

Vila Nova de Cacela

average rating is 4 out of 5

Quinta da Ria Golf Course offers one of the most scenic rounds in the eastern Algarve, combining enjoyable championship golf with magnificent views across the Ria Formosa and Atlantic Ocean. Situated near Vila Nova de Cacela and Tavira, the course enjoys a peaceful coastal setting without any property development interrupting the landscape, allowing golfers to feel fully surrounded by nature.

Designed by American architect Rocky Roquemore and opened in 2002, Quinta da Ria is an 18-hole, par-72 course measuring 6,053 metres from the back tees. The layout was created to provide an enjoyable challenge for golfers of different abilities while protecting the area’s original character, including its ancient olive and carob trees.

The two nines offer contrasting tests. Large fairway and greenside bunkers feature heavily across the opening holes, placing an emphasis on accurate driving and careful approach play. Water becomes more influential on the back nine, particularly around the 10th, 14th and 17th holes. The par-four 10th is the hardest hole on the card, with out of bounds running along the left, while the long 11th demands accuracy throughout. The 12th is a particularly memorable short par four, combining strategic club selection with superb views along the Algarve coastline.

Quinta da Ria works especially well for mixed-handicap groups. The fairways provide enough space to keep the round enjoyable, but good positioning is needed to avoid the bunkers, trees and water hazards. Practice facilities include a 300-metre driving range, putting greens, a short-game area and a nine-hole pitch-and-putt course.

After golf, players can relax at the clubhouse restaurant and bar or explore the eastern Algarve. Nearby Cacela Velha offers beautiful views over the Ria Formosa, while Tavira is known for its historic streets, riverside restaurants and island beaches. Boat trips, cycling routes and seafood restaurants also make this an excellent destination for golfers wanting more than time on the course.

About The Area

Vila Nova de Cacela is a brilliant Eastern Algarve base for a golf holiday, especially for golfers who want quieter surroundings than Vilamoura or Albufeira, but still want excellent courses, beaches and sunshine. It sits close to Cacela Velha, the Ria Formosa and the Spanish border, giving the area a more peaceful, authentic feel than the busier central Algarve.

The big golf draw is Quinta da Ria, set within the Ria Formosa Natural Park. The course is an 18-hole, par-72 layout with Atlantic Ocean and Cacela Velha Beach views, plus strategically placed bunkers and water hazards. Next door, Quinta de Cima adds a more demanding championship-style test, also an 18-hole layout set among lakes, streams, trees and open Algarve landscapes.

Away from golf, this part of the Algarve is made for slower, scenic exploring. Golfers can visit Praia de Cacela Velha, the fortress, the church and viewpoints around Cacela Velha, while nearby Tavira offers historic streets, riverside restaurants, boat trips and access to Ria Formosa islands. The area is also good for cycling, birdwatching, seafood, beach days and day trips to Vila Real de Santo António or across to Spain.

For Hashtag Golf Travel customers, Vila Nova de Cacela works best as a quieter Algarve golf holiday, a winter-sun escape, or a relaxed coastal golf break with strong courses and excellent off-course scenery.
