Pinheiros Altos Golf Course is a superb 27-hole championship venue set within the prestigious Quinta do Lago area of the Algarve. Bordering the protected Ria Formosa Natural Park, the course combines pine woodland, rolling terrain, lakes and abundant birdlife to create three contrasting nine-hole loops: The Pines, The Corks and The Olives.

The original holes were designed by American architect Ronald Fream, with a further nine created by Portuguese architect Jorge Santana da Silva and opened in 2007. Each loop plays to a par of 36, allowing different combinations to be used for an 18-hole round and giving returning golfers plenty of variety.

The Pines winds among the trees and features several memorable risk-and-reward decisions. Its signature ninth is a par three played across a valley to a raised, two-tiered green, while the par-five fourth tempts longer hitters to take an aggressive route towards the putting surface.

The Corks is the longest and generally the most demanding of the three loops. Its elevated opening tee provides impressive views across the Ludo Valley and surrounding hills, but the drive requires confidence and accuracy. The double-dogleg par-five eighth is another major test, with careful positioning needed throughout the hole.

The Olives follows a gentler rolling landscape between lakes and offers some of the course’s most attractive scenery. Its famous eighth hole features an island green, creating one of the most exciting and intimidating approach shots at Pinheiros Altos.

Firm, quick greens and strategically placed hazards mean thoughtful course management is more important than simply hitting the ball a long way. The club also provides extensive practice facilities, two driving ranges, coaching and a welcoming clubhouse with a restaurant, bar and terrace overlooking the course.

After golf, visitors can explore the beaches around Quinta do Lago and Ancão, walk beside the Ria Formosa, enjoy seafood restaurants in nearby Almancil or spend an evening among the marina, shops and nightlife of Vilamoura.
