Morgado & Álamos Golf Courses give golfers two very different rounds in one of the Algarve’s quieter and most scenic golf settings. Located between Portimão and the Serra de Monchique, both courses sit within the Morgado do Reguengo estate, surrounded by rolling countryside, olive trees and open views towards the mountains. For us, having two contrasting 18-hole courses in the same resort makes this an excellent base for a multi-round Algarve golf holiday.

The main championship layout is Morgado Golf Course, an 18-hole, par-73 course designed by European Golf Design and opened in 2003. Morgado has a spacious feel, with broad fairways giving you confidence from the tee and plenty of opportunities to use the driver. The challenge increases as you approach the greens, where large Scottish-inspired bunkers, subtle changes in elevation and carefully positioned hazards put much more emphasis on accuracy.

We particularly like Morgado because it suits a wide range of golfers. Higher handicappers have enough room to keep the ball moving forward, while stronger players still need to think carefully about positioning if they want to attack the flags. The surrounding fruit trees, olive groves and views towards Monchique also give the course a distinctly rural Algarve atmosphere.

Álamos Golf Course provides a completely different challenge. Also designed by European Golf Design, this 18-hole, par-71 layout opened in 2006 and is shorter and more compact than Morgado. The holes wind through undulating countryside around lakes and natural valleys, with smaller greens placing much more importance on precise iron play and good distance control.

For us, Álamos is the course where course management really comes into play. It may look less intimidating on the scorecard, but shorter holes do not necessarily mean easier scoring. Missing the correct part of the green can leave difficult recovery shots, while lakes, bunkering and the natural movement of the land continually influence club selection.

Practice facilities are excellent, with two practice tees, chipping greens, putting greens and the Morgado do Reguengo Golf Academy available for anyone wanting to work on their game. The clubhouse also has a restaurant, bar, Pro Shop and equipment hire.
