Boavista Golf Course

Lagos

average rating is 4 out of 5

Boavista Golf Course is an attractive par-71 layout situated between Lagos and Praia da Luz in the western Algarve. Designed by Howard Swan and opened in 2002, the course follows the natural contours of the land while providing views towards Lagos Bay and the Monchique mountains.

The 18-hole course measures approximately 5,737 metres from the men’s championship tees and is divided into two noticeably different sections. The opening nine climbs gradually through landscaped resort grounds and subtropical vegetation. By the 9th tee, golfers reach one of the highest points on the property, with panoramic views across the surrounding countryside and coastline.

Holes 6 and 8 are among the principal challenges on the outward nine, with shots required across a ravine. Good club selection and a committed strike are essential, particularly when the Atlantic breeze is present.

The inward nine descends into a lower, more sheltered area characterised by lakes, streams, bridges and mature gardens. Water becomes increasingly influential, demanding accurate approaches and sensible positioning from the tee. The varied terrain and changing scenery help ensure that the two halves of the round feel distinctly different.

Boavista has a driving range and a dedicated short-game area with separate putting and chipping greens, plus another practice green surrounded by bunkers. Individual, group and junior coaching is available through the resident golf professionals. Buggies, electric trolleys, pull trolleys and rental clubs can be booked, while handicap certificates are required when checking in.

The clubhouse provides a golf shop, changing facilities, food and refreshments. Accommodation is available within Boavista Golf & Spa at Bela Colina Village, making the course a convenient base for golfers who want to combine on-site play with additional rounds elsewhere in the western Algarve.

Lagos, its marina and the beaches around Praia da Luz are only a short drive away, adding considerable appeal for non-golfing partners.

About The Area

Puerto Colombia is a relaxed Caribbean base for a golf holiday near Barranquilla, combining tropical golf with beaches, seafood and an important piece of Colombian maritime history. The town lies around 18 kilometres from central Barranquilla, while Ernesto Cortissoz International Airport is roughly 25–35 kilometres away depending on the route. Private transfers are recommended when travelling with golf clubs.

The main golfing attraction is Club Lagos de Caujaral, located on the road between Barranquilla and Puerto Colombia. Its 18-hole, par-72 course was designed by Joseph Lee and is arranged around extensive lakes, tropical vegetation and naturally varied terrain. Water frequently influences play, while coastal breezes, bunkering and strategic approach shots create one of northern Colombia’s most demanding rounds. The course has also hosted the Caribbean Golf Open since 1972.

Lagos de Caujaral is a private, member-focused club, so guest access, tee times, caddies, club hire and transport should all be arranged before travelling. We recommend early tee times, when temperatures are generally more comfortable and the rest of the day remains free for the coast or Barranquilla.

Away from golf, Puerto Colombia’s historic pier was once one of Colombia’s main gateways to the world. Today, visitors can walk along the seafront, explore colourful murals and enjoy views of the remaining pier structure. Other local landmarks include Castillo de Salgar and La Ventana de Sueños, a striking 70-metre lighthouse overlooking the Caribbean.

Nearby beaches include Pradomar and Sabanilla, while waterfront restaurants serve ceviche, fried or grilled fish, plantain and fresh tropical juices. Puerto Colombia works especially well as part of a carefully organised Barranquilla golf break, offering championship golf by day and Caribbean food, sea breezes and memorable sunsets after the round
