Tramore Golf Club is a brilliant option for golfers who want an established Irish parkland course with a coastal town on the doorstep. Set on Newtown Hill just outside Tramore in County Waterford, the club traces its roots to 1894. It may sit close to the Atlantic, but the golf itself is defined by rolling, tree-lined terrain rather than linksland. We'd recommend it for a south-east Ireland golf break where the golf is challenging and the evenings can be spent by the sea.

There's more here than one course. The flagship Old Course is an 18-hole, par-72 layout stretching to around 6,700 yards from the back tees. Reworked by Jeff Howes as part of a major redevelopment, it blends mature fairways with strategic bunkering and subtly undulating greens that demand a good putting touch. It has hosted the Irish Close Championship three times, a good indication of the test awaiting stronger golfers.

The additional Newtown Nine, par 35, gives you an excellent alternative for a shorter round. Its tree-framed opening hole is notably tight, while the long par-three fourth plays towards a green guarded by a lake. We particularly like that the club can suit both serious golf groups and mixed-handicap parties, with short-game practice facilities, PGA coaching and a welcoming clubhouse bar and restaurant. Burrows Lodge also provides six twin rooms on site if you prefer a golf-focused stay.
