Golf at The Hawthorn

Oranmore

average rating is 4 out of 5

Golf at The Hawthorn is a spectacular 18-hole championship course at Renville Point near Oranmore, set directly beside Galway Bay on Ireland’s Wild Atlantic Way. With uninterrupted views across the water towards Galway city, the Burren and the Clare hills, it provides a memorable setting for a golf holiday in the west of Ireland.

Designed by Ryder Cup player Christy O’Connor Jnr, the par-72 course stretches to 7,308 yards from the back tees. The layout combines generous fairways with sculpted mounding, water features, strategic bunkering and large, carefully shaped green complexes. Its coastal position also means the Atlantic wind can completely change how the course plays from one day to the next.

The course is often described as a headland or coastal parkland layout rather than a traditional links. Golfers will still find many of the qualities associated with seaside golf, including exposed holes, open views, firm playing surfaces and constantly changing wind conditions. Hawthorn trees around the course can offer a useful clue about the prevailing wind, although the weather beside Galway Bay has a habit of ignoring the script.

Golf at The Hawthorn is particularly known for its strong opening and closing stretches. Wide landing areas allow golfers to play confidently from the tee, but finding the correct side of the fairway can make a huge difference to the approach. Strategic hazards encourage decision-making rather than simply rewarding distance, while the true, fast greens place extra importance on good pace control.

Different teeing options help make the course enjoyable for a wide range of abilities. Experienced golfers can take on the full championship challenge, while club golfers can choose a more manageable distance without losing the course’s coastal character or dramatic scenery. The ever-changing wind also gives returning golfers a fresh test on every round.

Practice facilities include a driving range and practice green, giving golfers somewhere to warm up before playing. The contemporary clubhouse overlooks both the course and Galway Bay, with The 2 Iron serving relaxed food and drinks inspired by ingredients and flavours from Ireland’s west coast. A pro shop provides golf clothing, accessories and equipment, while guests staying at The Hawthorn can also use the hotel’s luxury spa for some very welcome post-round recovery.

At Hashtag Golf Travel, we recommend Golf at The Hawthorn for golfers looking for championship golf, Atlantic scenery and five-star accommodation in one place. Galway city is close enough for restaurants, traditional pubs and live music, making the course an excellent centrepiece for a longer Galway golf break.
