Castlemartyr Golf Club

Castlemartyr

average rating is 5 out of 5

Castlemartyr Golf Club offers an attractive inland links-style experience within the historic grounds of Castlemartyr Resort in East Cork. Although it does not sit directly beside the sea, its open fairways, links-inspired shaping and areas of golden fescue create a different playing experience from a traditional tree-lined parkland course.

Designed by Ron Kirby, the 18-hole, par-72 layout measures 6,728 yards from the back tees. The course flows naturally through the old manor estate, with contoured fairways, strategic bunkering and large greens providing much of the challenge. Its generous appearance can be deceptive: finding the correct position from the tee is important if you want a clear angle into the greens, while exposed sections of the course allow changing wind conditions to influence club selection.

The signature par-three 5th is the standout test. Measuring approximately 210 yards from the back tee, it plays towards a large, strongly sloping green protected by deep bunkers. The ruins of the estate’s medieval castle provide a memorable backdrop, but golfers will need to concentrate on choosing the right club and avoiding the sand.

Multiple teeing options make Castlemartyr suitable for golfers of different abilities, including mixed-handicap groups. The on-site facilities also make preparing for the round straightforward, with a driving range, chipping area, putting green, professional shop and PGA tuition available. Buggies are offered seasonally, while hire clubs and trolleys can be arranged.

For golfers staying at Castlemartyr Resort, the course provides an exceptionally convenient round without sacrificing variety or challenge. Its location also works well for a wider East Cork golf holiday, with Cork city, Midleton, Cobh and several coastal courses all within reach.
