Blarney Golf Club

Blarney

average rating is 4 out of 5

Blarney Golf Club is an 18-hole heathland course situated in the peaceful Shournagh Valley near Cork. Co-designed by two-time Major champion John Daly, it combines elevated countryside views with undulating greens and several memorable risk-and-reward holes.

The course measures 6,332 yards from the back tees and plays to a par of 70. Its manageable overall length should not be mistaken for an easy round: changing elevations, strategically positioned hazards and greens with subtle movement reward accurate placement and confident distance control.

Blarney’s setting is an important part of its character. From the 2nd tee, golfers can look towards Blarney Castle, while other elevated sections provide views across the surrounding valley. The uphill 592-yard par five is one of the principal tests, requiring three carefully positioned shots for most players. Shorter holes bring their own dangers, including out of bounds, uneven lies and well-defended putting surfaces.

The closing hole provides an attractive finish, descending towards a green framed by water and the clubhouse. It is a suitably memorable conclusion to a course that balances dramatic scenery with an enjoyable challenge for mixed-handicap groups.

Practice facilities include warm-up nets and a putting green, while the golf shop provides visitor check-in and course information. Visitors, societies and tournament groups are welcome, with open competitions normally held during the main golf season. Advance tee-time booking is recommended.

Food and refreshments are available at the clubhouse café and restaurant. Golfers should note that the former resort hotel is no longer operating as visitor accommodation, so overnight stays should be arranged separately in Blarney, Cork or the surrounding area.

The club’s position makes it easy to include within a wider County Cork golf itinerary, with Blarney Castle and Cork city providing convenient non-golf attractions.
