County Louth Golf Club, known simply as Baltray to many golfers, is a traditional championship links overlooking the Boyne Estuary on Ireland’s east coast. Founded in 1892, it combines genuine links terrain with a thoughtful layout that feels natural rather than heavily engineered.

The present course was redesigned by Tom Simpson and Molly Gourlay in 1938. It plays to a par of 72 and measures 7,031 yards from the back tees, although several shorter options make the course suitable for visiting golfers with different handicaps.

Baltray’s holes run in numerous directions through rolling dunes, meaning the wind rarely presents the same challenge twice. Firm fairways encourage golfers to use the ground, while strategic bunkering, natural rough and changing coastal conditions reward imagination and careful course management. The greens are particularly important to the course’s challenge, with their contours placing a premium on accurate approaches and confident putting.

One of the most memorable holes is the short par-four 14th. An elevated drive creates an exciting scoring opportunity, but its bunkering and surrounding dunes can quickly punish an overly ambitious shot. The round finishes with a strong par five protected by substantial bunkers.

County Louth has hosted the Irish Open twice, in 2004 and 2009. The latter tournament produced one of Irish golf’s great stories when Shane Lowry won while still an amateur. The club has also staged the East of Ireland Amateur Championship since 1941.

Visitors can use the practice facilities before playing, while local caddies provide valuable help with lines, wind and the course’s subtle links slopes. The clubhouse restaurant overlooking the putting green is a welcoming place to finish the day, with locally sourced seafood among its specialities.
