Brocket Hall Golf Course

Welwyn Garden City

average rating is 4 out of 5

Set within the historic Brocket Hall Estate in Hertfordshire, Brocket Hall Golf Club is one of England’s most polished golf venues, combining country house surroundings with two championship courses: The Melbourne Course and The Palmerston Course. Located just 22 miles from central London, it works particularly well for premium UK golf breaks, society days, corporate golf and short-stay itineraries close to the capital.

The Melbourne Course is a par-72 layout opened in 1992 and designed by former Ryder Cup players Peter Alliss and Clive Clark. It follows the natural contours of the estate, crossing the River Lea several times and finishing memorably in front of Brocket Hall, with golfers taking a short ferry ride to reach the 18th green. It is a scenic parkland course where water, mature trees and subtle slopes make accuracy and course management important throughout.

The Palmerston Course offers a stronger woodland contrast. Designed by Donald Steel and Martin Ebert, it is a par-73 layout framed by ancient woodland, including hornbeam, Scots pine, Corsican pine and 500-year-old oak trees. With tree-lined fairways, well-placed bunkers and large undulating greens, it provides a more strategic test and is ideal for golfers who enjoy a thoughtful, traditional inland challenge.

Facilities include the Watershyppes Clubhouse overlooking Broadwater Lake, a Golf Academy, par-3 practice course, swing studio, locker rooms, restaurant and bar. For UK golfers, Brocket Hall is a strong choice for a Hertfordshire or London-area golf break, pairing naturally with nearby courses around St Albans, Welwyn Garden City and the wider Home Counties.

About The Area

Welwyn Garden City is a very practical Hertfordshire base for a UK golf break, especially for golfers who want easy airport access, London nearby and a greener, more relaxed feel than staying in the capital. It is one of England’s famous planned garden cities, so the town has wide boulevards, formal green spaces, shopping, cafés and good rail links, making it a simple short-break base rather than a full resort destination. Great Northern also highlights how walkable the town centre is, with the station, shops, cafés and central Parkway all close together.

The main local option is Welwyn Garden City Golf Club, based at Mannicotts on High Oaks Road. It gives golfers a convenient town-based round, with the club’s own course guide showing a varied 18-hole layout of par 3s, par 4s and par 5s.

For extra golf nearby, Mill Green Golf Club is another useful choice, based on Gypsy Lane in Welwyn Garden City. It positions itself as a premier local golf destination and gives visiting golfers another nearby option without needing a long transfer.

Away from golf, Stanborough Park is the easy local highlight. It is a Green Flag park on the edge of Welwyn Garden City, with two lakes across 126 acres, and activities including boating, fishing, paddleboarding, archery and walking.

For Hashtag Golf Travel customers, Welwyn Garden City works best as a low-fuss Hertfordshire golf weekend, a society base, or a practical London-edge golf stop. It is not a luxury golf resort, but for nearby courses, airport access, green space and easy links into London, it does the job neatly.
