Cape Cornwall Club

St Just

average rating is 4 out of 5

Cape Cornwall Club offers one of the most distinctive clifftop golf experiences in England. Situated near St Just in the far west of Cornwall, the course enjoys sweeping views across the Atlantic, with the Isles of Scilly sometimes visible in clear conditions. Its exposed position means the coastal wind frequently influences club selection, shot shape and scoring.

The 18-hole course was created during the late 1980s when Donald Payne transformed the former Nanpean Farm with the assistance of course designer Bob Hamilton. Today, it measures 5,672 yards from the white tees and plays to a par of 70. Although relatively short by modern standards, the layout demands thoughtful course management. Cornish hedges, stone walls, elevation changes and unpredictable breezes provide much of its defence.

Memorable holes include the driveable dogleg fourth, where accuracy and restraint can prove more valuable than distance. The short par-four 12th provides another tempting risk-and-reward opportunity, accompanied by views towards Cape Cornwall and its landmark chimney stack. This is followed by the uphill par-three 13th, played into an amphitheatre-like green setting. The narrow 14th heads towards the sea before the course turns uphill towards the clubhouse.

Forward blue tees shorten the course to 4,105 yards and a par of 63, providing a more accessible option for beginners, improving golfers and higher handicappers. Buggies, trolleys and golf clubs are available to hire, while visitors are welcome throughout much of the year.

For golf breaks in Cornwall, the club’s on-site accommodation is particularly convenient. Its 23 bedrooms, restaurant, indoor swimming pool and leisure facilities allow golfers to stay beside the course while exploring St Just, Land’s End and the wider West Cornwall coastline.

About The Area

St Just is a characterful base for a golf break in the far west of Cornwall, combining dramatic coastal golf with former mining landscapes, independent shops and some of Britain’s wildest Atlantic scenery. Recognised as Britain’s most westerly town, it sits close to Cape Cornwall and provides a quieter alternative to the busier resorts around St Ives and Newquay. Cornwall Airport Newquay is approximately 72 kilometres away by road, and travelling by car is recommended.

The main golfing attraction is Cape Cornwall Club, located just outside St Just. Its 18-hole course is a par 70 measuring 5,672 yards from the white tees, with shorter forward tees available for beginners and higher-handicap golfers. The layout crosses undulating ground divided by traditional Cornish hedges and stone walls, while the Atlantic Ocean, rocky coastline and Cape Cornwall headland create an unforgettable backdrop. On-site accommodation, dining and leisure facilities also make it a convenient choice for a stay-and-play break.

Golfers staying longer can travel to West Cornwall Golf Club at Lelant. Founded in 1889, it is Cornwall’s oldest existing golf club and provides a traditional links challenge shaped by firm fairways, uneven bounces, undulating greens and coastal conditions. Visitors and golf societies are welcomed.

Away from golf, the surrounding Tin Coast reveals St Just’s important mining history. The engine houses at Botallack form part of the Cornwall and West Devon Mining Landscape UNESCO World Heritage Site, while nearby Geevor Tin Mine explores the lives and work of generations of Cornish miners.

Walkers can follow the South West Coast Path towards Land’s End or explore Cape Cornwall, Priest Cove and the surrounding cliffs. Sennen Cove, Porthcurno and the harbour villages around Mount’s Bay are also within reach. St Just is particularly appealing in late spring and early autumn, when golfers can combine coastal rounds with walking, heritage and relaxed evenings in a traditional Cornish town.
