Norfolk Golf Club at Barnham Broom offers two contrasting 18-hole courses in the countryside west of Norwich. Formerly known as the Valley and Hill courses, the layouts entered a new chapter in 2026 as the Pennink Course and Steel Course, recognising their respective designers.
The Pennink is Barnham Broom’s flagship course. Originally designed by Frank Pennink and now playing to a par of 71, it follows the natural contours of the River Yare valley. Tree-lined fairways, water hazards and strategically positioned greens place a premium on accuracy and course management. The river is particularly influential at the par-four 3rd, crossing the line of play and asking golfers to think carefully from the tee.
Donald Steel’s par-72 course provides a noticeably different test. Built on higher, more open ground, it has wider fairways, expansive Norfolk views and a subtle links-style character. The Steel is generally more forgiving from the tee, but exposed sections can become challenging when the wind strengthens, while well-placed bunkers reward sensible positioning.
Together, the two courses make Barnham Broom an excellent option for a 36-hole golf break, with enough variety to keep consecutive rounds interesting. Practice facilities include a grass driving range, putting and short-game areas and a five-hole academy course. PGA tuition is available, while the golf shop provides equipment, clothing and a limited number of rental club sets.
After golf, players can head to the Sports Bar, where the terrace overlooks the Pennink Course. Barnham Broom’s adjoining hotel also allows golfers to combine both courses with comfortable accommodation, dining, a swimming pool, gym and spa facilities.
The club is approximately ten miles west of Norwich and close to both the A47 and A11, making it easily accessible for golf societies, short breaks and regional golf tours.

Wymondham is a charming Norfolk market-town base for a relaxed UK golf break, especially for golfers who want history, countryside and easy access to Norwich without staying in the city. The town has medieval streets, independent shops, cafés and the impressive Wymondham Abbey, giving it more character than a simple overnight stop. Its self-guided heritage trail takes around 60–90 minutes, starting from the Market Cross, and links together the Abbey, medieval streets, Wymondham Abbey Station and green spaces such as Toll’s Meadow and The Lizard.
For golf, Wymondham works best as a base for nearby Norfolk courses. Barnham Broom is one of the strongest local options, with the Steel and Pennink courses, practice facilities, grass driving range, academy holes and short-game areas. It offers 36 holes across two courses in summer, making it useful for a multi-round short break.
Another handy option is Bawburgh Golf Club, set in Norfolk countryside, with both 18-hole and 9-hole golf available. It gives visitors a more flexible extra round, especially for mixed-ability groups or golfers who want something a little less formal than a full resort day.
Away from the course, Wymondham has a lovely low-key appeal. The town has a market tradition dating back to a charter issued by King John in 1204, with a weekly Friday market still held today. It also has access to the Mid Norfolk Railway via Wymondham Abbey Station, giving the area a nice heritage-travel angle.
