Bovey Castle Golf Course

Newton Abbot

average rating is 4 out of 5

Set within a magnificent 275-acre estate on the edge of Dartmoor National Park, Bovey Castle Golf Course offers a wonderfully traditional round in one of Devon’s most memorable settings. The course was designed by renowned architect J. F. Abercromby in 1926 and remains a fine example of strategic Golden Age golf.

The par-70 layout measures approximately 6,143 yards from the white tees. Although relatively modest by modern standards, it rewards thoughtful course management, confident iron play and an accurate short game.

Bovey Castle’s opening nine winds through a sheltered valley alongside the Rivers Bovey and Bowden. Water influences several of these holes, including the attractive par-three 3rd and the memorable 7th, where streams and river channels create both visual drama and genuine strategic decisions. The back nine climbs onto higher, more open ground, introducing changing elevations, wider views and greater exposure to the Dartmoor breeze. This contrast gives the course two distinct characters and helps make every round interesting.

Practice facilities include a recently developed driving range, while the Bovey Castle Golf Academy provides coaching for beginners and more experienced players. Further investment has also brought improvements to the golf shop and members’ facilities.

The course forms part of the five-star Bovey Castle estate, making it particularly attractive for a luxury golf break in Devon. Guests can combine their rounds with elegant hotel accommodation or private lodges, spa facilities, indoor swimming and a choice of dining options. Dartmoor’s walking routes and the estate’s extensive outdoor activities also provide plenty for non-golfers.

About The Area

Totnes is a lovely base for a South Devon golf holiday, especially for golfers who want character, countryside, river views and easy access to some excellent nearby courses. It is not a typical golf resort town, and that is part of the appeal. Totnes has a relaxed, independent feel, with a historic high street, local food, interesting shops and the River Dart running through the town.

For golf, we would look at nearby Dainton Park Golf Club and The Dartmouth Hotel, Golf & Spa. Dainton Park is a well-regarded parkland course on the outskirts of Newton Abbot, designed to follow the natural shape of the land. The Dartmouth Hotel, Golf & Spa is another strong option, with an 18-hole Championship Course and a shorter 9-hole Dartmouth Course, which makes it useful for mixed-ability groups or a more relaxed second round.

Away from golf, Totnes is full of easy extras. We would recommend a walk up to Totnes Castle for views over the town, River Dart and Dartmoor, then time around the riverside, cafés, markets and independent shops. You can also add paddleboarding, kayaking, River Dart trips, Dartington Estate or a day towards Dartmouth and the South Devon coast.

Our tip: choose Totnes if you want a golf break with proper local flavour, good nearby golf and a softer, more personal Devon holiday feel.
