About The Area
La Gomera offers a wonderfully peaceful alternative to the Canary Islands’ larger golf destinations. Its dramatic volcanic ravines, forested mountains and quiet coastal villages make it ideal for golfers looking to combine warm-weather golf with walking, nature and genuine relaxation. Although the island has only one golf course, its striking design and setting make La Gomera worthy of a dedicated golf holiday rather than simply a day trip from Tenerife.
Tecina Golf is located on the island’s sunny southern coast, overlooking Playa de Santiago. Designed by Donald Steel, the 18-hole course begins high above the resort before gradually descending towards the Atlantic. Ocean views accompany golfers throughout the round, with Tenerife and Mount Teide often visible across the water. Terraced fairways, elevation changes and areas of native and subtropical vegetation create an experience that feels completely different from the flatter resort courses found elsewhere in the Canaries.
Away from the course, Garajonay National Park is the island’s outstanding natural attraction. This UNESCO World Heritage Site protects an ancient laurel forest filled with moss-covered trees, streams and atmospheric walking paths. La Gomera has more than 600 kilometres of trails, ranging from gentle woodland routes to demanding hikes through deep valleys and rugged mountain landscapes.
Other places worth visiting include the colourful hillside town of Agulo, the waterfront capital of San Sebastián and Valle Gran Rey, where steep cliffs frame beaches, palm groves and small villages. Playa de Santiago is particularly convenient for golfers, offering a quiet seafront, restaurants and relaxed evenings close to Tecina Golf.
Most UK visitors fly to Tenerife South Airport before travelling to Los Cristianos for the fast ferry to La Gomera, which takes approximately 50 minutes. The additional journey helps preserve the island’s secluded atmosphere and feels like part of the experience.
With its mild year-round climate, La Gomera is especially appealing between October and May. It is best suited to golfers who are happy to play Tecina more than once while leaving plenty of time to explore one of the Canary Islands’ most beautiful and unspoilt landscapes.
