The Manor House Golf Club
Chippenham
The Manor House Golf Club is a beautiful 18-hole championship parkland course in Castle Combe, Wiltshire, set within the rolling countryside surrounding The Manor House estate. Designed by Peter Alliss and Clive Clark, the par-72 layout combines dramatic elevation changes, tree-lined fairways, water hazards and almost 80 bunkers, making it one of the most visually impressive golf courses in the South West.
Playing at roughly 6,500 yards, the course makes excellent use of the natural Bybrook Valley. Golfers regularly play from elevated tees into fairways below, while the River Bybrook and several lakes influence club selection throughout the round. The limestone base also provides very good natural drainage, helping the course remain playable for much of the year.
There are plenty of memorable holes. The 600-yard 3rd is the longest on the course, demanding both length and accuracy through a narrow corridor of trees. The short par-four 8th tumbles downhill towards the valley and gives longer hitters the opportunity to attack the green from the tee, although the River Bybrook guards the left side. One of the highlights is the 17th, a dramatic par three dropping around 120 feet towards greens protected by the river, bunkers and water.
The finishing hole is another standout. The par-four 18th measures 384 yards and requires an accurate tee shot before the approach towards an attractive green framed by the surrounding countryside. It provides a suitably scenic finish to a course where strategy and positioning are every bit as important as distance.
Practice facilities include an open-air grass driving range, chipping green and putting green, while PGA professional coaching is available. The club also operates a fleet of 50 all-electric buggies, useful given the course's changing elevations. Visitors can book tee times seven days a week, making the course straightforward to include within a Wiltshire golf break.
The five-star Manor House hotel is just a buggy ride away, making this a particularly strong option for golfers wanting luxury accommodation and championship golf together in the heart of Castle Combe.
