About The Area
Mechelen is a smart Belgian city base for golfers who want historic charm, easy travel and nearby countryside courses without staying in busier Brussels or Antwerp. It sits neatly between the two cities, making it practical for short breaks, while the compact centre gives visitors plenty to enjoy after a round.
The closest golf option is Golf Club De Wijnvelden, located in Onze-Lieve-Vrouw-Waver, around 15 minutes from central Mechelen. It offers a well-laid-out 9-hole course, making it useful for a relaxed round, arrival-day golf or mixed-ability groups who do not want a full championship test every day.
For a stronger 18-hole option, Golfclub Kampenhout is within reach between Mechelen, Leuven and Brussels. The club was founded in 1989 around the neoclassical Kasteel van Wilder and has an 18-hole Championship Course with practice facilities and a clubhouse in converted farm buildings. Royal Keerbergen Golf Club is also nearby, giving the area another established Flemish Brabant option for a wider golf itinerary.
Golf around Mechelen is best from April to October, with late spring and early autumn usually giving the best mix of course condition, daylight and comfortable temperatures. The golf here is mostly parkland and countryside in style, so expect flatter walking, water features, trees and tidy course management rather than dramatic elevation.
Off the course, Mechelen is genuinely lovely. The Grote Markt is the historic centre, dominated by St Rumbold’s Tower, with the Town Hall on the opposite side and houses in styles ranging from sixteenth-century renaissance to eighteenth-century rococo. Visit Flanders also highlights Mechelen for St Rumbold’s Cathedral, Hof van Busleyden, cosy streets, baroque façades and the Kazerne Dossin memorial.
For golfers seeking accessible Belgian golf, a beautiful historic city base and easy links to Brussels, Antwerp and Leuven, Mechelen is a quietly excellent choice.
