Royal Zoute Golf Club

Knokke-Heist

average rating is 3 out of 5

Located in the elegant seaside town of Knokke-Heist on the Belgian coast, Royal Zoute Golf Club is one of Belgium’s most prestigious and historic golf venues. Set between Oud-Knokke and Le Zoute, the club covers around 80 hectares and offers 36 holes across two 18-hole courses: the Championship Course and the shorter Executive Course.

The Championship Course, also known as l’Extérieur, is the main attraction. This par-72 layout measures around 6,241 metres and is widely regarded as one of Europe’s great coastal courses. Although it sits slightly inland from the beach, the routing moves through natural dune-style terrain, with rippling fairways, sandy ground, pine trees and coastal winds shaping the round.

The course rewards accuracy and creativity rather than brute power. Fairways can feel tight in places, especially where trees frame the holes, while the more open dune sections bring a stronger links-style character. Strategic bunkering, changing lies and firm conditions mean golfers need to think carefully about position from the tee and angle into the greens.

The Executive Course, or l’Intérieur, is a compact but technical par-64 layout of around 3,550 metres, making it useful for lighter rounds, mixed-ability groups or golfers wanting a second course on site.

For Belgium golf holidays, Royal Zoute works beautifully as a premium coastal option, especially when paired with Bruges, Knokke, Ostend or northern France. It is ideal for golfers who enjoy classic links-style architecture, seaside atmosphere and traditional private-club character.

About The Area

Knokke-Heist is Belgium’s most polished seaside golf destination, sitting at the eastern end of the Belgian coast close to the Dutch border. It combines smart beach life, art galleries, restaurants, shopping and one of the country’s finest golf clubs, making it ideal for golfers who want a refined coastal break rather than a purely resort-based stay.

The headline venue is Royal Zoute Golf Club, one of Belgium’s most prestigious and historic courses. Golf was first played here in 1899, with Harry Colt redesigning the course in the early 1900s, and the club receiving its Royal title in 1925. Its Championship Course, known as l’Extérieur, is a classic coastal test set through slightly wild dune and pine terrain. The club describes it as selective, particularly when the wind gets up, with quality greens and a comfortable clubhouse adding to the experience.

Royal Zoute also has an Executive Course, making Knokke-Heist useful for mixed-ability groups or golfers wanting a lighter second round. Visitor access and current playing conditions should be checked before travel, as this is a high-demand club with handicap rules and seasonal green fee variations.

Golf here is best from April to October, with late spring and early autumn usually offering the best balance of course condition, weather and fewer peak-season crowds. Coastal wind is part of the fun, so it suits golfers who enjoy shaping shots and thinking their way round.

Off the course, Knokke-Heist has plenty of charm. The coastline is split into beach areas including Heist, Duinbergen, Albertstrand and Het Zoute, while the resort also offers nature, shopping and a smart promenade atmosphere. Bruges is close enough for a day trip, adding canals, medieval streets and Belgian beer to the itinerary.

For golfers seeking classic Belgian coastal golf, seaside elegance and easy access to Bruges, Knokke-Heist is one of Belgium’s strongest and most stylish golf escapes.
