Dalmahoy Hotel & Country Club

Edinburgh

average rating is 4 out of 5

Dalmahoy Hotel & Country Club combines the character of a historic Scottish country estate with the convenience of a large four-star golf resort. Set within 1,000 acres of parkland on the western edge of Edinburgh, it offers two on-site courses, extensive leisure facilities and quick access to both the city and its international airport.

The hotel has 215 rooms and suites, with accommodation spread between the original baronial manor house and more contemporary sections of the resort. Many rooms overlook the gardens, woodland or fairways, while family rooms make Dalmahoy suitable for mixed golf and leisure breaks.

Golfers can choose between two contrasting 18-hole layouts. The Championship East Course was designed by James Braid and can stretch beyond 7,400 yards from its furthest tees. More commonly played at 6,684 yards, it remains a demanding parkland test requiring accurate driving and confident approach play.

The shorter West Course offers a more relaxed alternative, although its mixture of par threes, shorter par fours and several demanding longer holes still provides plenty of challenge. It can also be shortened to nine or 13 holes, making it useful for beginners or golfers with limited time. Practice facilities include a refurbished driving range and short-game areas.

The Pentland is the hotel’s signature restaurant, serving menus inspired by Scottish produce while overlooking the course and estate. The Brasserie provides a more informal option, with additional drinks and light meals available in the resort’s bars.

Leisure facilities include an indoor swimming pool, gym, sauna and steam room. Tennis courts and fitness classes provide further options away from the courses.

With central Edinburgh approximately seven miles away, guests can easily combine golf with sightseeing, restaurants and evenings in the city. Its airport location also makes Dalmahoy particularly convenient for groups flying from elsewhere in the UK.

About The Area

Aberlady sits at the very heart of Scotland’s celebrated “Golf Coast,” a stretch of East Lothian shoreline that packs an extraordinary concentration of championship links into a compact and easily navigable area. For travelling golfers, it offers one of the most efficient and rewarding multi-course itineraries in the UK — world-class golf within minutes of your accommodation.

Most famously, Aberlady is home to Muirfield, the historic home of The Honourable Company of Edinburgh Golfers and a multiple Open Championship venue. Muirfield is revered for its immaculate conditioning, strategic bunkering and demanding but fair routing that tests every facet of your game. Within a five-minute drive you’ll find Gullane Golf Club, offering three outstanding links layouts — Gullane No.1 in particular delivers elevated tees and sweeping views across the Firth of Forth. A little further along the coast lies North Berwick Golf Club, one of the most characterful and historic links courses in the world, famed for its quirky Redan hole and unforgettable closing stretch along the shoreline.

Golf here is classic Scottish links — firm underfoot, wind-influenced and wonderfully strategic. It rewards imagination, trajectory control and patience rather than brute strength.

Off the course, Aberlady itself is peaceful and charming, with welcoming country pubs and coastal walking trails around Aberlady Bay Nature Reserve. Edinburgh is just 30 minutes away, adding castle views, whisky tastings, fine dining and vibrant nightlife to any itinerary.

The prime golf months are May through September, when daylight stretches late into the evening and the links play fast and true. For golfers seeking pure championship pedigree in a compact, accessible setting, Aberlady is hard to surpass.
