The Dutch

Spijk

average rating is 4 out of 5

Located in Spijk, near Gorinchem, The Dutch is one of the Netherlands’ most prestigious modern golf clubs. Designed by Colin Montgomerie in collaboration with European Golf Design, the course was created with a strong tournament focus and has hosted major professional events, including the KLM Open.

The 18-hole championship course has a polished, contemporary feel, with wide fairways, strategic bunkering, large greens and strong water features shaping the round. It is designed to be playable from the forward tees but much more demanding from the back, making it suitable for both confident club golfers and stronger players looking for a proper test.

The Dutch is known for excellent conditioning, premium facilities and a private-club atmosphere. It is less about dramatic dunes or seaside golf and more about high-quality inland championship design, with smart risk-and-reward holes and plenty of attention to detail.

For Netherlands golf holidays, The Dutch works especially well as a premium addition to itineraries around Rotterdam, Utrecht, Amsterdam or the wider central Netherlands region. It is ideal for golfers looking for a modern, tournament-standard course rather than a traditional links or parkland venue.

About The Area

Spijk is a small village in Gelderland’s West Betuwe area, close to Gorinchem and the River Linge. For golfers, its reputation is built around one very serious venue: The Dutch, one of the Netherlands’ most prestigious modern golf clubs. It gives Spijk a far bigger golfing profile than the size of the village would suggest.

The Dutch is an 18-hole championship course designed by Colin Montgomerie in partnership with European Golf Design. The course has an inland links character, with rolling fairways, bold bunkering, water hazards and gorse-style planting creating a more dramatic feel than many flatter Dutch layouts. It has also hosted the KLM Dutch Open three times from 2016 to 2018, giving it proper tournament pedigree.

This is not a casual pay-and-play course, though. The Dutch is a premium private club, so access usually needs to be arranged through membership, guest invitations or specific golf travel arrangements. That exclusivity is part of the appeal: the conditioning, service and clubhouse experience are positioned at a very high level.

Golf around Spijk is best from April to October, with May to September offering the most comfortable weather and longer daylight. The course style rewards strategy rather than just distance, so golfers who enjoy shaping shots, managing angles and thinking their way around will get the most from it.

Off the course, Spijk is quiet and rural, so most visitors will look slightly wider for dining and sightseeing. Gorinchem is nearby for restaurants, riverside walks and historic streets, while the wider Gelderland countryside is good for cycling, villages and relaxed Dutch scenery.

For golfers seeking a premium Dutch golf experience with tournament history, excellent conditioning and a calm countryside base, Spijk is a small destination with a genuinely big-name course.
